Well, where do I start.....I've been meaning to start this thread for a little while now, so finally here goes.

I posted part one of this project, a dry build of the standard kit, in my showroom a few weeks back. Since then my subscription has expired, my shoowroom has been frozen and for now at least i'll not be renewing my membership so this project will be shown via the forum. Actually, I think it's the best place for a build, after all a showroom is a showroom right? All comments are welcome and i'd appreciate any constructive critisims you care to make.

The idea for the build is an M38 inspired FAV with Willy at the wheel. The trigger for starting the project was the Willy FAV Scorcher buily by Skottoman, who has been very helpful with ideas for my build; a very creative guy (check out his showrron and you'll see what I mean)

I want to replicate as closely as possible the M38 wheels so after I built the kit, I fitted a pair of narrow padlatraks to the front as made by SRB Bloke; they are very well put together and I can highly recomend them.

The rear wheels are borrowed from my Grasshopper, but I'll order new ones at a later date.

Next I have fitted a bumper set-up from a WW2 to the front in place of the standard FAV bumper. I made a tempoary 'bracket' from cardboard to see how it looked which in theory was going to look really cool but the reality is somewhat different...

post-32039-1323639903_thumb.jpg post-32039-1323640383_thumb.jpg

As you can see, not so cool ;) I would have needed to trim the WW2 mount and replicate the bracket in styrene, which wuld be fine, but I think maybe I'm trying to be a little too clever for my own good so for now at least I've shelved this idea.

Next I want to finish fitting an aluminium damper set and, assuming I get a Dremel for Christmas, I cut away a section of the front bar and set a winch back into the chassis... :)

more to follow...

I love the idea of a fast attack willy (no sniggering at the back please). I've always like the idea of the FAV but tamiyas effort never quite hit the mark for me. But putting a WW driver head and arm in the mix changes the feel of it a lot. Its strange how just a few changes can drastically effect how a car looks. I wonder how it would look with Brat wheels & tyres all round?

Lovin it so far, makes me want one now :)

WooHoo!

Glad to see you finally got a build thread going. I was about to ask you if you already made this car, and I just missed it somehow?!

Anyway. Nice start! Really love the padlatraks all around.

Front bumper is interesting. I am wondering if you can cut the springs and somehow bring it a little closer to the body?

Maybe build a bracket that holds the bumper and can mount the winch just in front of the FAV bumperbar thing?

I guess if the bumper and winch were tucked in close to the body (without cutting away the original FAV bumperbar) it might work out real nice? What about the wider Willy bumper?

I will be watching this thread. I'm positive it will turn out awesome!

Cheers,

Skottoman

cheers Skottoman, you're right the winch (and bumper) definatley need to be tucked in close, hence why i'm thinking of cuting the winch into the chassis, but i'll see. As for the wider bumper, it's way too big, it looks like a comedy bumper :)

I like the look of this build so far. It actually looks great without any bumper at all. Are you planning a 'cartoon' gun to match the wild willy caricature ? Perhaps twin mini guns mounted on the bonnet, mad max style ???? :)

I was thinking about this the other day. I was never a fan of the gun, and never monted it on my original FAV. However, for this build I think it's a must although the scale appearance will be at odds with Willy's fat head, so a characture gun would be the way to go :)

old style twin brownings would look cool like those on . I THINK the Red Baron kit from years ago . that had Mutley as the pilot lol or as found on flea bay :-

The Red Barron, now there's an idea!! ;)

Oh, maybe that's what I should do with my remaining NIB FAV!?

Anyway... keep powering on with this build. I say go for anything and everything WW that you can put on it, then remove if it just doesn't work for you.

Bumper, winch, spare, rollbar foam, extinguisher, NOS bottle, wheel color, decals, WHEELIE BAR! Everything!

Cheers,

Go for it! I'm all set on the M38 theme and I think a Red Barron Willy would look pretty cool next to your Willy FAV Scorcher ;)

Hahahaha! no i haven't given up, just busy as you suggest. See attached pics; I have transplanted Willy's right hand now and both his head and NOS bottle are ready for paint. I plan to work on the cockpit for now (the winch is on hold), and I'd like to create a fuel cell, similar to that on the WW, and place it behind Willy. This would be in place of the battery cover supplied with the kit.

I should perhaps warn you that this will be a slow build, but I'll get there ;)

Willy in the cockpit looks great! You just have to do the "Right hand mod" in order to make it look right.

Can't wait to see it coming along. Seeing the cockpit there takes me back a few months to the FAV Scorcher... good times.

KEEP AT IT! :)

You know I rarely like deep mods as this one, but have to say this FAV Willy looks really awesome! Love the work you did with the tires, mate. They sure look good. Will be checking the progressions on this one as it seems to me it's going to look ACE when finished!

Heres' a little update on Willy who, as you can see, is having something of a make-over. I still have the helmet to paint, which will be done using the box-art 3 colour scheme of red, white and blue, but the driver figure is all done just needs gluing together, as you can see.

post-32039-1330289289_thumb.jpg post-32039-1330289342_thumb.jpg

I chose black for the cockpit because I couldn't get a good match between the green-drab brush paints and TS-28, and I didnt want to invest in a spray-gun. I think it looks fine, and since this will be something of a runneer I don't want to get too hung up on the detail.

This is taking time as I fit the build in between other comitments, but the bottom line is i'm having fun doing it and isn't that what it's all about? Hopefully Willy should be all done in the next couple of weeks, at which point I'll turn my focus to the car itself, starting (actually carrying on) with building a fuel cell positioned behind Willy.

By the way, can anyone please recommend a good source for a Mesh material, suitable for builing a cage or grill? and any advice on how best to spray paint a 3-colour helmet would be greatly appreciated!!

thanks.

Mesh for window nets ? take a look at my Funco mate . If its metal mesh your after try a motor factors . that stuff they use for car body repairs is ideal . re helmet . spray the lightest colour first , mask and then second , re mask then the last .A airbrush would work best .Hobbycraft do a cheap one for around £20 . if not very light coats with a rattle can will do .

Nice funco fella, and those mesh nets look spot-on, I recall doing a similar thing years ago on my original FAV, using the netting from a subuteo goal ;) . It''s a metal mesh that i'm after so i'll check out motor factors as you suggest; thanks.

Thanks for the tip on the paint too. I have the spray paints alteady, so very light coats it is...

Sooooooo Happy to see you coming back to posting some progress!

Makes me wish BADLY, that I'd made a build thread for my Willy's FAV Scorcher. Arg... ;)

Your build seems to be going very well, the cockpit looks awesome, you have the NOS bottle bolted up... good to go!

With all the ideas going on, this thing will be a masterpiece!

Willy is looking really good.

For metal mesh I hit up the supermarket for some cheap kitchenware. Sieves, tea strainers and fry-pan splatter guards are all good sources with differing hole sizes and wire thicknesses. Plaster/dry wall mesh is also good for larger holes/wire thickness.
