Hey Guys,

Have started on my Wild One project, and early on I seem to have hit a stumbling block and am hoping someone can help. I've stripped and cleaned the gearcase (luckily it appears an alloy pinion hasn't been used much, gears are in very good condition), and whilst cleaning/decreasing all the parts, I appear to have lost the differential spacer (page 7 of the manual). Can anyone tell me exactly what this part is, and is there anything I can use in its place?

I'll post photos of the build as I go, got a slighly different colour choice in my mind, cheers

Is that the "OH NO, not off to a good start" part? :D

Oh, yet another WO.. Cool.. (Be sure to apply to the WO SIG, if you haven´t already done so). :)

Sorry to say that I don´t know the size of the part you´re missing, but perhaps a gearset from the re-re FAV could be sourced for spares? Otherwise, I ma sure that some of the other SIG-members have had their gearbox stripped down, and has the information you need. :D I guess that either I am very fotunate, or simply don´t run my WO enough, as it hs had no problems with its gears at all. :D

Looking forward t oseeing your WO project. :)

Cheers..

Cheers for that, yep already joined the SIG, I'd rather not have to buy a FAV gearset as this lot is still very good. According to the manual, it appears that the part is from the metal press parts bag? Can anyone confirm this?

From hazy memory, it's a thick washer isn't it? I think you might find it hard to find one, although somebody will probably have one if you're lucky - try a wanted in the trades?

M8 yes it is , But i have just pulled my WO apart to see what size it is . It's the brass 850 bearing that is the spacer .

So if you have a old 850 brass bearing that will do . I have just looked at the bearing to compare too make sure it is .

Hope this helps .

Helps a lot mate, I've got plenty of the brass 850's. I thought it was a nylon part that I lost (doesn't mean it wasn't engineered by the previous owner, using something else).

That's good , just slap one of them in & see as you still may need to put a shim or too in MAYBE .

I need to put my WO back together now .

You're both right.

That diff spacer bit was nylon originally. Its also most of the reason that wild ones and FAVs stripped diffs. Matman is right, an 850 bronze bearing will do the trick, I actually used a 850 ball bearing (which I think is marginally wider) when I built my wild one around 4 years ago and I've never had a problem since.

If you quietly sneak in some re-re frog/FAV dog bones or UJs, I believe that they are less bindey than the old hex drivers and that also helps extend the diff's longevity.

Cheers

Thanks both matman and Capt Splatt, great info, rebuilt the gearbox with the 850 bush in there and it fits together very well, here's some progress:

As it came to me:

gearbox apart and rebuilt:

As it sits now:

next will be the shocks rebuilt, some more metal polishing, while waiting for a 23T RZ, and 1150 bearings so I can finish it off.

:D Love the yellow , looks great . Paint or did you die it ?.

+ these are great cars to use . I did put the re re frog shocks

on my runner as you can't fix the old ones if stuffed . :) .

But other than that , I have not done much else .

It's paint, one good crash and it'll probably all scratch up. I'll see how the shocks come up, otherwise I might order some aftermarket ones

The yellow is an inspired choice. I'd imaging there's a prototype sitting around Tamiya HQ that looks just like it. It looks very 'falcon'

When you're looking at shocks, the front (hornet) shocks aren't really that good at holding onto oil. Tamiya have released a hop-up set for the re-re FAV which actually use the Wild One shock tower. Alternately, if you have a look (somewhere) in the RCTech NSW Vintage racing thread, my old mate Jak Rizzo found a nice set of after market 1/18 shocks that look more like the originals (but actually held oil) that he has fitted to his and they look great.

Looks very hot in that yellow. :) And actually, it seems like you have found proper use for the otherwise nearly useless HB 2010 wheels, lol. They go along nicely with your colourscheme.

What about bodycolour? Any cool and unusual ideas for that??. :D

Yeah, had the wheels and tyres sitting here from my HB2010 build, and thought they may look ok on a yellow trimmed Wild One. Still thinking about the body colour theme.

Another quick question, how long are the front shocks? Id measure mine but they are soaking in cleaning solution in pieces.

Just measured the ones that I replaced at front 77mm and rear 76mm eye to eye.

Just replaced mine with the FAV hopup set but I haven't run it yet though.

I put re re hornet shocks on mine & they are going fine . As it was just easy to do that at the time .

Frog rear Or you could use hotshot shocks with the wild one cap to get it closer .

Or even the re re FAV shock set as they are black ? $35 bucks stalla .

Got some GPM rears here the same length as standard for the rear, and ordered some GPM losi mini t rears for the front, will see how they look. The originals may clean up ok yet, soaking the bodies in shellite as we speak

Great looking Wild One.

Please keep the pics coming.

Can't wait to see this good looking buggy finished.

You have been bitten hard by the Tamiya bug hey.

Great cars man.

Great cars man.

Will do mate, waiting on some parts so probably not much work now till after Christmas.

Yep, love the old school Tamiyas and Kyoshos

I'm liking the yellow.... oh and those wheels.... I have a soft spot for that design :)

me too, like the star dish design a lot, needed to find a use for the HB2010 wheels, and I think I've found it, still thinking about bodywork though
