You should be able to claim back something from the Post Office - first you have to wait I think 15 days, before which it's not considered lost, then you fill out a form, rememembing to claim for both the item value & the postage cost - give them copies of everything - paypal receipts, proof of posting, ebay listing, ebay fees, etc etc ... they then send you a letter telling you they will investigate/search for it, which will take another fortnight ... then you get a letter saying they can't search for it as it's not a trackable service ... then a fortnight or so later you get a cheque for what you claimed for, unless it's capped by you not taking out extra compensation ... I think the limit is £36 ATM.

Having been through all the above myself I tend to use fully tracked couriers now (through Parcelmonkey, mostly) for any large/valuable items - it's easier & often cheaper. There are also less steps in the chain between you & the buyer, so less opportunities for tea leaves & incompents to be involved.

Having been on the other end of "lost in post" items it's usually the seller not sending it & using that as an excuse, so don't get too bent out of shape that your buyer went to paypal & won ... total swizz though, ebay/paypal encourage you to use the post office for deliveries (I'm assuming they get some sort of kickback), they blame you if it's "lost" as it's not a tracked service

My experience is that the most common pattern for things disappearing is dishonest buyers... in the past I ran a mail order business sending out thousands of packages over the course of a year and probably one a month would be reported missing, and 50% of those would be reported missing by the same small group of customers.

Clear, correct delivery addresses and a return address are a big help in getting packages to their destination, or back to you if the destination is unknown.

Unless you are prepared to gamble on the value of the thing you have sent, always send it insured. In the UK that is Special Delivery or Standard Parcels - despite popular belief, Recorded is no more insured than standard 1st class (the value of 100 1st class stamps). If someone is not prepared to pay the cost of insured postage then they are probably not someone worth selling the item to anyway, clearly they don't care whether it arrives intact or not.

Payments through Paypal will generally be decided in favour of the purchaser, Paypal gifts are lost forever.

Caveat venditor - seller beware!

exactly,,,( dishonest buyers ),,,,,,,many of them get the items and they claim as not received.

you should be always careful with who to deal...
