Hello,

Does anyone know of any hobby grade pistol grip transmitters suitable for small children? My son is dead keen to have a go, but his hands are too small to hold either my Spectrum DX2 or Futaba MJ properly.

Thanks for any advice,

Pete

For a cheap 27Mhz handset, you could look out for a Xmods one -i obtained one in a parts haul, and whilst its pretty poor in real terms, its actually quite handy as it folds in two and the aerial mast stores in a groove on the side. You can fit it in a trouser pocket so is ideal when packing space is tight. The handgrip isn't what i'd necessarily describe as child size, but it is considerably smaller than my Hobbyking pistol grips, and is definitely aimed more at child than adult.

Thanks Percymon, that's the sort of thing that would be perfect for him ;)

This is a photo of my parts haul - may give you a better idea of the size..

do these xmod transmitter work correctly with a standard am receiver?

I read that you cant reverse throttle and steer so it is possible that you happen to drive or steer in the wrong direction.

edit: there is a steering reverse, trim and range setting, throttle only trim so with the right esc it could work

edit2: the kyosho kt18 transmitter looks nice but thats probably because of the design, the grip might still be too big, price is way off.

traxxas radios are rather small too.

Thanks for the help everyone. All the Traxxas radios I have ever seen (Traxxas TQ) are full size. Do you have a different Traxxas control in mind?

Hi Peter

My 5yo boy uses the Losi 2.4ghz that comes with the mini-T. Is almost full size but only takes 4xAA batteries so is lighter than most transmitters. Might be upgrading him to an Eurgle unit soon as he is about to get his second RC car. Let me know if you are interested and I'll bring it along next run.

Cheers

Hi Mark,

The losi control will be a good unit when he is a bit older, and I have one waiting for him, but I had it in my head that some company had made a smaller control especially for the younger ones. I just bought a car yesterday because the picture in the ad made the control look smaller, but when I picked it up it was a full size control. I think I'm too eager to get him his own control anyway, as he is still so young, but he does like his new car even if he can't hold the control.

See you at the next catch up,

Peter

The Nikko Evolution 1/10 pistol grips are good for kids, my 7 year old and 5 year old use them all the time. You can't reverse the trims so careful choice of ESC and servo are needed, but the steering control can be swapped from side to side, and it runs on a 9v battery so it's very light. The crystal fits in the top so it's easy to swap when you need to.
