It was a quick down a dirty trial to test my new GoPro set up on my transmitter so I can drive and film at the same time. I discovered a number of things not to do and hope that the next video will be much better.

I'll post a running video of this final build as soon as I have taken some good studio shots

So it has been 9 months in the making. I would like to thank everyone that has put up with my numerous updates and posted all the fantastic comments, it was thanks to you, and my extremely understanding wife that I have been able to finally get this finished.

That said these types of projects are never truly done and I already have ideas for changes. But this is it until I get it down to the beach for some poser shots and then a little action in the surf.

I don't know what I am more excited about, sharing my final build or seeing what everyone else comes up with when other members can finally get there hands on one.

Very cool finished product. I can't wait to get one when they are available. How stiff is the chassis? Does it flex much? I was thinking that hiding two aluminum 90 degree L brackets along the length would stiffen the chassis to prevent damage to the body after landing off jumps

A 50cal or similar ie Radshape gearbox protector would stiffen the chassis if it needs it as per a SRB .

The chassis shown will be a 4mm milled Alu model, but what you are currently looking at is just a 3D print that is only for photo purposes. You can use a cut down SRB plate or similar after market Alu version. The body mounts in 3 points along the length of the chassis so that helps reduce the flex you normally get with a typical stock SRB.

Given how fast I have seen Jim aka Shodog make an SRB go, you might need more reinforcement to go that fast and survive

I designed the car to within similar constraints as the originals it chassis is based on. Good scale speeds, nothing too crazy.

For your production chassis how about making a recess that would allow a cut down stock fiberglass or aluminum chassis to sit in. Not visible from the bottom and the body covers the top.

Not a bad idea Jim, I'll take a look. I wanted to make the chassis you see available in 4mm Alu, but Shapeways don't do CNC parts - yet

I really want one of these but can't justify the $510 cost. Will they ever decrease in price?

Hi Jim,

Glad to hear you really want one - thank you. BUT I totally understand that the price is hard to justify. My price is based on the technology & material costs available right now. Like all emerging tech I do expect it to come down considerably over time, just look at how conventional printing has com down in price. In the last 2 years 3D printing for this sort of project has come down from the thousands of dollars to the hundreds of dollars. I don't think it will every be able to compete in price to typical injection molded part that is made in the tens of thousands of units, but I hope a body like this will eventually cost around $100. How fast that cost come down will depend on the success of new businesses that find a use for on demand 3D printed products and help drive the costs of the technology down.
