I just got this from flea bay :)

Hornet1-1.jpg

Hornet3.jpg

the question is.... do I put msc or esc in it, as I think it's original and not a re re.

Would you guys suggest keeping as tamiya sold it or get it into the modern world

It will be run but not often

your opinions please

I would tear it down completely and clean every part, then build it using the manual. That thing is dirty! Besides, it's the only way to know what problems it might have in the gearbox, etc.

And definitely use an ESC.

The re-release will have >ABS< printed on the chassis tub somewhere.

Definitely use an ESC in a model that's run. MSCs are only for looking at.

Strip it and fit bearings if they're not already fitted (about $12 for a Hornet). Check the kit supplied aluminium pinion for wear. Pointy teeth are wornout. Hornet uses 0.8 module sized 18 tooth pinions.

The opening for the hump pack is under that top cover. I'm comparing the picture to an original and I don't see any differences. They are fun and do go with an ECS. That looks like a vintage motor too.

That is definitely a re-re Hornet, you can tell by the body( no hole for the resistor & re-re sponsor decals), the chassis( no hole for the hump back batt.) & the gearbox( different pattern on the side) there are other differences but thats all I can see from the pics.

Tamiya meant for this to be run with an ESC as most were sold with a TEU-101BK (Tamiya ESC).

So add a ESC to it & go & have some fun :)

The shiny Mabuchi-stickered motor in the 2nd picture is the same I got with my Re-Re Hornet and Re-Re Hot Shot.

Would go for an ESC instead of MSC, too. However, the Hornet will drive you nuts anyway, so have fun! :)

My 1984 Hornet which I have had since new has a replacement chassis from the 1990's when I broke the original. Under where the steering servo goes & inside the chassis there is RCC Grasshopper and above this in a circle is Made in Japan. I presume the original 1984 chassis would be the same? The Re Release has RCC Grasshopper and above this in the circle is a part number. This would confirm that the differences in the cut out for the battery hump pack mentioned by others earlier mean the chassis at least is the Re Release Hornet. The motor as well as the body as others have said is also from the Re Release. That doesn't mean that the buggy isn't a hybrid of new and old but my bet it is a Re Release Hornet. If so an ESC is apropriate and a much more reliable and controllable speed controller than the MSC.
