OK, so here we go, another Egress rebuild thread - seem to be popular these days !

The start point was a very amicable sale from forum member Hambo - nice easy transaction, many thanks Richard.

Car arrived very well packaged, we have to pay for carrier bags in Wales these days, so it was great to gain 20 for free with the Eggy :)

So the start point (pictures from Hambo's original post)..

forumpic2.jpg

forumpic11.jpg

I'd intended leaving this a few weeks to clear the workbench of other projects, but whilst waiting on some parts I thought it would be rude not to have a look and probe at my latest purchase.

So body first..

the original rear wing has suffered around the bolts holes for the wing end plates..

IMG_20120123_191725.jpg

.. perhaps i can add a second layer of fresh lexan on the inside, bonded with CA glue, to strengthen the area and reattach the plates - any suggestions ??

IMG_20120123_191959.jpg

The undercowl has some flaking paint, so that will be removed and repainted - perhaps smoke, perhaps gunmetal, perhaps boxart silver, perhaps chrome ?

The body itself has no splits or tears - it will clean up nicely with some car polish on the outside - i'd prefer to repaint it for a better finish, but its OK for now and with cold weather at the moment its no time to be spraying paint. I may get a ***** body in time. A new set of original decals should arrive in the morning; thought i'd grab those while they are still fairly reasonable prices ! ;)

I couldn't resist any longer, so with screwdriver and spanner to hand ;) ....

wheels off and cleaned. Schumacher blue foams have been added inside the tyres to give the original tyres a bit of help to prolong their lifetime..

IMG_0018.jpg

Now onto the rear suspension area..

Rear Hi-caps removed, drained of their (superclean) damper oil, cleaned and now ready for rebuild - not sure what weight oil to use, but most of my cars run 35wt silicon oil - any suggestions ??

IMG_0007.jpg

The rest of the rear end was then removed from the car. All plastic parts cleaned up...

IMG_0016.jpg

Rear wing stay, pressure plates, chassis plate spacers all cleaned to remove dirt - no agressive cleaning required !

IMG_0015.jpg

It quickly became apparent that the car had seen very little use, as Hambo had said all along. Wheel bearings were like new once a little surface grime was removed with a dry cloth..

IMG_0012.jpg

Onto the rear gearbox internals..

..well at this point i started to wonder why i was bothering, the grease was as it left the tube the day it was originally built, no discoloration, no debris, nothing but clean grease to be seen. As a result i decided not to open up the differential, just clean off the grease ready for a new application on rebuild...

IMG_0008.jpg

All screws, bolts, washers and nuts removed to date also given a clean in mild pH neutral detergent..

IMG_0014.jpg

So this leaves me with the chassis now looking like this,,

IMG_0020.jpg

Next stop, the front end..

IMG_0019.jpg

IMG_0021.jpg

IMG_0022.jpg

A new front and rear bumper are on their way, but may find a home in my next project due to arrive next week if the plan comes together :o

All comments, suggestions most welcome !

Great condition really it looks damage free. Great pickup buddy and great pics too, keep it coming.

I hope you need yellow shock collars :)

mate,,,what type of metal cleaning u used!! looks so neat and shinny :)

Nothing special at all..

plastic parts with pH neutral liquid soap and a toothbrush

same for gearsets

bearings just wiped with dry microfibre cloth

Dampers wiped with dry cloth, bottom mounts with soap and toothbrush again

Screws were cleaned in hand hot water with pH neutral liquid soap, and 4 minutes immersion in an ultrasonic cleaner. I did the screws in batches as i wasn't sure whether they were all the same material. So each type of screw, bolt, washer and nut got a separate session in the ultrasonic.

The black plastic parts are literally as the day they were made - spotless, not a mark on them

The metal parts have a few very minor marks on them , but again there wasn't al lot to remove from them bar some old dry dirt

I did use a bit of scotchbrite pan scourer on the wing stay rod but thats the only part that received any form of abrasive

The camera flash makes the screws look a lot cleaned than they are in realtity - they are clean, but not quite the chrome sparkly finish the photo would suggest ;)

Remember this car barely got run - a few sessions on tarmac, and then the rest is just 15 or so years of storage dust

I'm hoping the rest is similar - so far so good :)

Compared to my previous restorations this one should take considerably less time to strip and clean - no wood screws, not metal straps holding the chassis together etc etc

Front knuckles, driveshafts, shock tower and hi-caps now removed and ready for cleaning.

Struggling with the front bumper - one of the nuts that recesses into the plastic on the top side is turning in its recess so will need to improvise to remove the last bolt holding the bumper on. Have left it soaking in WD-40 for a few hours to free up the screw thread a little.

Looking good i must say. I assume this will be dismantled, cleaned, rebuilt and run?

The Egress is a beautiful looking piece of kit i must say :( I guess we will be seeing this re issued too at some point in the not so distant future!

It will be rebuilt, starting today.

Will it be run ? Well dunno yet - it might be too nice for that and its soooooo beautiful to look at B)

I'm going to try to repair the original rear wing.

The shell doesn't have any damage as such, a slightly bigger hole where the rear body post goes but thats all. Undercowl is fine, just flaky paint.

I was all for ordering a ***** body set, and a new set of original decals arrived today, but i'm having a play with the old shell....

As it arrived..

IMG_0046.jpg

and the inside - brush painted but only where the decals didn't cover the clear shell, so not too much paint. Inside..

IMG_0048.jpg

Initial test with my magic lexan paint remover..

IMG_0049.jpg

looks promising !

another 5 minutes later..

IMG_0050.jpg

and after 30 minutes, with a few interuptions to my other project..

IMG_0051.jpg

topo down, with white cloth underneath to see progress..

With my attention diverted to a nice short project of a Supershot/Hotshot hybrid runner, this afternoon i got back to the Eggy, turning my attention to the rear wing and repairing/reinforcing the broken section where the end plates bolt on..

Before..

IMG_20120123_191725.jpg

After paint removal, I cut a section of spare lexan to shape and CA glued this behind the original secion, then added some scraps of lexan to level out the original mounting surface...

IMG_0061.jpg

IMG_0060.jpg

All together

IMG_0058.jpg

End plates bolted together so i can get them symmetrical..
