I am in the process of rebuilding my Sand Scorcher and have a question about the steering assembly. I am missing and the tie rods and was wondering if there are any other Tamiyas out beside the RR and Ranger that shared the same tie rods. If not then I am going to have to make my own.

Which begs another question. How long are the left and right tie rods respectfully?

thanks for your help

The Scorcher, Ranger and Rough Rider - all had the same tie rods.

They are not shared with even the Super Champ (The Super Champ ones are black - and slightly larger in diameter).

Making your own would be fine - as long as you are not too fussy about originality. The original ones are a threaded shaft - with no "thread" in the centre......

I will try and measure some over the weekend if no one else gets to it before me !! [:)]

The total length is 49mm. The lengths of the threads on both ends is 10 mm. The 'blind' part measures 29mm, but you could have calculated that easily (49mm - 2(10mm) = 29mm [;)] ). The diameter of the shaft is 2mm.

The left and right tie-rods are exactly the same, according to the manual. I hope this helped you out in making your own... [:)]

Be on the look out for a "special tie rod kit" bag on ebay. It has all the pieces to make our tie rod. Also, to get those ends, find a bashed up WWI and grab the rods from under the rear axle.

The "rod ends" from the WW1 are the rod ends from the Super Champ - not the Scorcher. The scorcher uses the plain old plastic ones!! Depending on the age of the kit - they are black for early - and creame/white for later kits.

I also have some steering arms - however I am in Aus......so it may be more cost effective to get them from the states if you are there.

My rod-ends on my Sand Scorcher are black as well...

Considering that it has hex screws, rear arms that take 2 bearings and a different gearcase - I think mine would mine be a early Sand Scorcher then. Is that right? [;)]

(It has a grey bumper though - but I think that was replaced later on.)

LOL @ Darryn...

But the Blitzer beetle didn't came with hex screws... [;)]

I almost wanted to check on my Scorcher again though! [:o)] (not) [:P]

Actually Sjoerd - I was using a "play on words".........what I meant by "bitzer" was that your scorcher is made up of "bits" from all over the time frame then !! [:D] "beetle" as I am sure you are aware is the "nick" name of the volkswagen beetle. [:D]

LOL
