Full ball bearings? Well, not really! [;)] Ball bearings for the servo saver and the king pins were optional, 50149 RM Steering Ball Bearing Set. And yes Willy, I know you knew.[:)]

And for everyday use what about the modest tamtech? This one is really punchy even compared to nowadays standard and body details are great.

Haha, yes then, stand corrected.

My old RM1 didn't have it when we ran it, but since rectified.

Back then no one would have even thought about ballracing the steering imho. [8D]

Hi Terry - this is a bit off topic - but I actually drove a CAT when they first came out for the importer here......loved it.

On another tangent, I had the pleasure of chatting with Cecil - a very nice and educated man. A real "racer" at heart.

Cheers

well guys, I'm an onroad maniac. I'd say the Ferrari 312T3 is perhaps the best detailed car, its lovely. Having just got a jps lotus its a close 2nd, hard to go past these. Tyrrells r also show stoppers, when I show this car to people they r impressed. Countach is slick and still makes me remember the days when a mate had a later model Qv5000s countach. The 3 porsches 935/934 + 936 r cars I've never seen in the flesh , but I guess they would jump quickly to the top of my list. If I could just get one........ I think the least owned onroader is the jps lotus.

You might be right, but I think the Ford C100 RM Mk.4 must be the least owned onroader. First of all, you don't see a lot of them around and they were even rare in the shops in its days. The fullsize Ford C100 was a little known and unsuccessful racer for a short time so car enthusiasts would hardly want to buy a model of it. Tamiya chose to put a hard plastic body on 1/12 racer at the time when Associated launched their RC12i and most anyone looking for a 1/12 pan car would be interested in performance only. Also, I believe it was more expensive than the Tornado RM Mk. 3 which shared most parts, but was more race oriented with a lexan shell. That said, I have never owned one, and would very much like to add it to my collection!

If you count newer onroad models, I would think the Daytona Thunder and Street Devil are quite rare too.

"i" or "e"?

Associated brought out their RC12e as their first 1/12th onroader; the RC12i came later (with damped rear pod?).

RC12e was built like a brick, like a mini RC300. It was a decent racer after it got the lightweight chassis, lightweight radio plate and aluminium screws treatment but out of box it was only on par with the RM Mk1 imho. COG was pretty high compared to the Tamiya.

Come on, its much better this way, would you like to see every kid in the street bashing a Wheeler? [;)][B)][:(]

id="quote">id="quote">

There's a point in there... [;)]

But now these days even a re-release bodyset is quite hard to aquire... I think it'll be quite hard to put a Wheeler 2 together then - if you don't want to spend $$$ just on the bodyset that is... [;)] Those 'Boy Racer' wheels and TA03 ally shocks shouldn't be too hard in comparison! [:D]

BTW: when you fit a lot smaller wheels... won't that drastically affect the gear ratio of the car? I mean, it'll probaby start over-revving... [8)] [|)]

Sjoerd, when you fit smaller wheels you will alter the gear ratio, but all that happens is that it will accelerate faster, but have a much lower top speed.

Willy, the RC12e came out in 1978, RC12i came out in 1982, when race performance had moved on from what the RM series was capable.

Darryn, yeah Cecil is a great bloke, the Colin Chapman of the RC world. In the UK the first CATs were a real handful (the Mini Mustang was the car of choice!) until they stretched it, then it started to become popular.

I must admit to liking the body of the Ford C100, but at the time as a racer the car itself did not appeal to me. I had been running an AYK of similar design 2 years before. Tamiya had designed out all the technical complexity that made the RM Mk1/2 cars we drooled over, but produced a car that was too simple compared to race cars of the time.

I think the Brabham BT50 BMW is the hardest one to get.

You can build a C100 quite easily based on a Tornado, because the Ford bodies are not that difficult to get.

Brabham bodies are however quite rare, so ...

In Miami Vice? Thought they were using a black Ferrari Daytona and later a white Testarossa? [?]

Also love those old times! [^][8D]

I own the Lambo LP500s and Tamiyas 1st, the porsche 934 rsr turbo. My heart tells me the porsche, but for sheer looks its the Lambo. handling wise, i dont have a clue, i'm far to scared to let my babies run at the moment but i will be in the near future. I really like the looks of all the early tamiya on-road cars. very sleek. but v v expensive[:(]

id="quote">id="quote">

You're right Theo, and you're also not! [;)] The black "Ferrari Daytona Spyder" was actually a Chevrolet Corvette with the V8 and a fiberglass bodyshell! Monogram even made a correct model of it. Suppose an original Daytona was too rare and expensive even for the Miami Vice budget. Maybe too fragile for some of the scenes as well.... The white Testarossa was genuine though.

The Wild Dagger/Wild Willy 2 gearbox has the choice of 18t and 20t pinion, and both Dagger and WW2 originally come with 18t. Using a 20t with the RC Boy's wheels should be acceptable.

Also, there's principally not such as a thing as "over-reving" for an electric motor. A very hot modified may throw its winds when run without load at nominal or higher voltage, and though I have experienced it, it's a very rare occasion.

I have both the GOLF and the RENO 5 and these have to be the best on road racers, i'll be taking a Golf runner to Snetterton witch is fitted with a black motor hoping that a couple of you guys will also be tacking one.

id="quote">id="quote">

As Terry points out, I meant the "i". I got my first RC12i two weeks after the Tornado RM Mk. III (and the Wild Willy!) was first shown by a Tamiya representative on the Nordic Championship in January 1983. Being a Tamiya fanatic, I initially had great hopes for the Tornado. After the driver broke the vulnerable "castor adjustable" front suspension on both sides, and dropped long down on the results list behind Schumacher lexancars, Deltas and RC12i's, I thought I would never race 1/12 Tamiya's again. Little did I know, I would run the RM Mk.5 with acceptable success a few years later.

Well back to Assoc. When I bought my RC12i, it had been on the market for some months, and Associated had already experimented with an independent whishbone type front suspension (with oil dampers) by then, and a friend of mine who was sponsored byt the Norwegian Assoc distributor, ran the "is" in the Nordic Championship only to discover the normal "i" was much better. Early RC12i's didn't have the "trailing arm" split in the chassis though, so team drivers got the modified chassis plate after failing with the "is". Then the crusade started for real!

And yes, it had the friction damper rear pod. Good old times; I ran mine with Schkee, Porsche 917, Porsche 956 and Lola T70 bodies before we all switched to the boring but effecient Osella and Toj.

There was a Countach featured in a Miami Vice episode. The character it belonged to played the part of a son of visiting royalty or something like that, and he was the rebel type. Pretty cool chase scene between him and Sonny...

Yup, no way RM1/2 would keep up with the 12i.

You'd get lapped (twice!?) in every heat.
