Do any of you own cars that are strictly shelf queens? How many do you have?Where do you keep them? What are your reasons for building these cars and then never using them?I remember seeing a few cars displayed in a expensive window cabinet with immaculate cars sitting on the shelves!Could this be an alternative to nib collectors who like seeing these cars in preserved condition?Any thoughts on this type of r/c collecting?Something Darryn1,spice,bcollection ect might consider doing in the future??

Many of mine are shelf queens. I built them becuase I wanted to be able to touch them, spin the wheels, make motor sounds while playing with them. I don't have the desire to run all of them. Why drive them when the parts are so hard to come by. I have lots of new current cars I can thrash on to get me RC driving fill. My favorite runners would be my midnight pumpkin, FAV and Rough Rider.

My collection are mainly shelf queens. I restore them to look like the original (meaning like in the Tamiya manuals) and shelf them. I have a few NIB but really prefer "new built/restored". That's the way I can enjoy them most..... I even spend money on expensive paintjobs in order to make them look as good as possible; money I will never get out of the car if I ould ever sell it... [;)]

At the moment I don't even have a real runner; just NIB, shelf queens and projects. I'm done with electic cars. I'm currently looking for a FG Marder; my brother has one and driving it was so much FUN you won't believe it until you see it. It's off-road, scale 1/6 and has a 23cc 3,8 bhp 2 stroke engine. THE BEST !!! [:D][:D]

I have 20 shelf queens and 3 to become shelf queens. I place them in a self made - very sheap - display cabinet (see my showroom).

Away from dust which can destroy a car's appearance in a few years. I've built some rare ones from NIB (Countach, Toyota LB Turbo,...) cause I like to look at the car itself rather than a cartboard box. I know that what I do isn't fantastic for value but I don't care.

Touching, investigating and looking at a complete car makes me happy !

LOLOL- I would like a dollar for every time this topic or one very similar has been done before!! [:D]

Just about all of my cars will be built one day......easier to store for now as they are in their boxes.....too hard to store both boxes AND built cars.

I like the fact that I can "tease" myself by opening a box and enjoying the look of the parts in their blister packs.......self depravation can sometimes be a good thing.[:P][:D]

Having said that - some of my most "treasured" cars are my new builts and runners.......like my optima's, my RC-10 and my Viper, Lancia Rally and Wheeler etc etc

I guess I am "making hay while the sun shines" - while I can source and afford to get the cars I love NIB - I will do that.......as it will only get harder and harder to get parts for some cars......at least you know with a NIB that everything is there!

KOENC mentioned that building his NIB cars was not good value ....... Koenc - I know what you feel - but it has to be said that if you love the car - who cares what it is worth - you bought it and built it because you really liked the car - not because someday it "MIGHT" be worth more than you paid NIB. I say GOOD ONYA MATE !! [8D]

To be totally honest - I could care less if all my cars were nothing tomorrow.......as I collect because I love them .......not for their value!!

If I did it for and "investment".......badword.....there are some stocks going cheap at the moment......I bet I could make much more with them , even better - buy some real estate!!

Please dont think I took any comments personally - just thought I would tell you guys my "philosophy" on collecting. (actually - I hate the term "collector" - as for some reason lately it seems that the term has taken on a "negative" connotation with some people.).

Perhaps I am an "EXTREME OLD R/C ENTHUSIAST"..... LOLOL [:(][:D]

Cheers guys - sorry for the long post.

Cheers

Forget it... personally know some silly ******s who've lost more on the ASX than they've spent on RC toys. At least RC toys you can look at, play with and do vroom-vroom sounds; can't do that with a CHESS certificate to a now-defunct company. [:(][:(]

Real estate mightn't be bad though... worst case one could use land to build a nice all-terrain track!! [:P][:P]

I'd say that the best that could happen... [:o)] Especially when it's in my town! [:P]

I don't really like NIB cars...If I get a NIB I build it....I would rather have a nice car I can enjoy on a shelf than a box of parts...I can appreciate a NIB Sand Scorcher or other rare cars....But I'm glad I have nice one on the shelf to look at...Most all of my cars are Shelf queens...I have a King Blackfoot (with a hummer shell) stadium blitzer and stadium thunder as runners...Also my mini cooper is a runner...But the rest are stored nicely on shelves in my garage.....

I get a lot of pleasure out of building, and painting my cars....

But it is a hobby and do with it what you want...That is the joy of collecting..do it how you want...[;)]

Some of my older NIB kits will undoubtedly end up as shelf queens and some may even be driven [:D]

At this moment I don't have the space and time to build the older kits but in a few years time you will see many of my NIB kits as built or runners. When I say a few years I am thinking of moving to either Sydney, Vancouver or SF area where I will have the possibility to have a much bigger house. I plan then to built a pro track for both on and off road cars.

At the moment I have 2 cars that will be exclusively a shelf queen. This is the car that I had when I was a kid (I wasn't silly enough to get rid of it the first time around[:D]) - My Avante 2001

My other soon-to-be shelf queen is a nice little sandscorcher I picked up for £50 from the LHS! - I've now done the body shell, I just need to clean up the chassis somewhat & obtain a driver & new tyres!

In terms of NIB, the only one I've got is a TigerIV (004) which will be built as soon as I get back from Snetterton (It arrived yesterday, and I had a great deal of trouble restraining myself from opening it!)

the other 2 cars I own (Avante & 306 Maxi) I run carefully

I have a couple dedicated shelf queens. Mainly my brother's old Grasshopper that I restored, a Black foot, a Mu low rider. I have a Blitzer Beetle and Nissan King Cab as a runner. I am in the process of restoring a Sand Scorcher which will be a shelf queen.

Well this is the first time I have written in the forums, but I guess its as good a topic as any. I hardly ever run my cars amd 99% dont have radios[:)] I have the most fun with these cars restoring and repairing the bodies. I would have to say that my dream cars are complete basket cases that have all the parts but need lots of asthetic work. I love to paint and thank heavens that most Tamiyas only have one or two paint schemes per model or I would have alot more cars. LOL! But I love to take the finished models down and look at them. Im more of a modeler at heart. I guess I really dont know what it is about having these guys on the shelf. But then again I was the kind of kid who would set my GI JOES and just stare at them[:P]

Just happy to be a part of the club
