I have the Isuzu Mu Low-Rider version and was wondering what it would take to convert it to the Cross Country version. Anything within the suspension?

Original Mu "off-road" wheels will be very hard to find, but they are regular touring car size wheels, so any normal width touring car wheels will fit. Of the XC-tires, the Pajero tires have the most aggresive pattern and are thus the best for off-road. Also, they are the easiest to find.

To increase ride height/ground clearance to "normal XC", remove the spacers inside the dampers (underneath the pistons. Also, you will either need to move the spring adjusters down to compensate for the low-rider's short springs, or change to normal XC-length springs.

For more torque, replace the low-rider's 20t pinion to 16t.

That's all!

The XC wheels and tyres (Pajero)are still available from tamiya as the are spares for the XB Pajero, which until recently you could still buy in the UK. I have bought three sets from my local model shop recently they took 5-6 weeks to arrive from japan, not sure you can do this in US though. If you can, all you will need to do is take the small plastic spacers out of the shocks, i hope this helps.

Cheers

The Low-Rider wheels are TGX (1/8 scale) size, so XC-tires won't fit. You can mount 50839 TGX Rally Block Tires though. They have a more aggressive pattern than any of the XC-tires, but unfortunately their diameter is a little smaller, so you will loose ground clearance.

As pointed out already, if you want to use XC-tires, you need a set of touring car wheels (or any of the XC-wheels). The tires for the Pajero are used on more models than any of the other XC-tires, including the still available Blazing Star and XB (RTR) Pajero, and should be available from any decent Tamiya stockist, including Tower. Their part number is 9805481.
