Just gor my hilux ready again after so many years and whoops ...

The speedo does deliver very little power : I've tried to connect the battery directly to the engine and the transmission definitiverly works fine, but once the speedo is connected the power drops dramatically (the car hardly moves).

This speedo is almost new : my father who originally owned the car was more of a modeler than a RC fanatic and never actually ran the car (one battery pack maybe), so this is more or less the first time this speedo is operating. I've onpened the speedo box, and there are no burnt components, both fets seem to be working, they get slightly warm (35degrees approx) when the speedo is operating but nothing abnormal.

Any idea welcome (would also accept a used speedo [:I] ).

When the battery is connect to the speed controller does it get hot? If so, the battery is creating a "short" somewhere. If its not then you might want to try look for resistor that might be faulty.

Definitively no

Which resistor are you talking about : the two fets? are these available as spare?

Raemin,

I think you should check every wire, you could have a false contact

somewhere, or some of them could be oxidated.

Check the battery connector if is making proper contact.

Check if the connector make good contacts with wires where they

have been united. Same for motor wires and speedo wires.

Open the speedo and clean it inside where there are contacts.

I think it should work since it wasn't almost used.

I read this article a few days ago and have to say your knowledge impressed me... Mine is the old NE-01 version with the large plate, and the three switches.

I've opened the box and every thing is perfectly clean. As the motherboard is fairly precise and shows most compoents properties, I am plannning to test the resistances one by one, and finally check for the cables. That's more or less what I can do as I have no idea on how to test the remaining components (fets, potentiometers and diodes).

I was amazed to see that the electronic were designed by temiya (cf motherboard copyright). I understand know why this kit was so expensive...

Yeah, out of pure curiousity I bought one just to open it up & study.

(Now I just gotta piece together the rest of the truck!)

There's not much there that can really go wrong with time.

Only idea might be that the microswitches might have gotten a bit

sticky or corroded over the years. No idea if they can be opened

up and checked, or replaced. They look pretty standard sized but.

Does any one have any pics of a speedo with no lid on , I bought my hilux completely dismantled ,the previous owner even took the speedo apart , im not sure how the switches are supposed to be coupled up to conecting rods inside .

Thanks Steven

I had a Hilux ESC go bad. I repaired it and then something else went bad in it. I replaced the whole circuit board with a cool speed control made by or at least marketed by Schumacher. I don't know if they still make it. It is a servo operated electronic speed control that was as snap to install. It does not use any switches and is much smoother than the Tamiya board. Once the lid is on, you cannot tell it has been "modified". Jim

That is an idea...

Then again, why not just gut the whole lot and stick a modern ESC inside the box? Keep the servo there (connected with Y-lead) to move the leverarm just for show, but there's plenty of room in the case to stick a Novak Rooster in there imho. [:)]

I no longer own the truck but I do have another of the Schumacher speed controls. I can take a pic and email it to you but I don't know how to post one here on the board. Yes....I am computer stupid. Jim

All the "modern" Novaks I've felt have been pretty cool (not more than 40degC?) by end of run, so I don't think the Rooster will get hot enough on the standard motor to be too bothered.

(truck pulling Excepted!)

Also the HiluxSC's box has a diecast metal lid, which makes an excellent heatsink. Wouldn't be hard to hook it up to the ESC's heatsink with some thermal grease. (Check your local PC shop for some, if your local electronics store can't help.)
