anyone done any work to the new gold "Boomerang" wheels yet?

they look silver chromed + yellow clear painted on top....

not genuine golden plated like the old originals :(

also the paint seems to have pooled up around the 7 holes in the centre

and noticeably thinner at the little hex heads around the outer edge

- did they paint wheel facing downwards perhaps

The ones that I bought are much better quality than the originals, and the gold looks that bit better too. One thing is for sure though, there is no way anyone can ever pass them off as original issue. As you say, they have been primed in silver/chrome and then just given a blast over the front with the gold plating. Mine have masses of overspray on the tyre rim.

you got overspray? :) mine are all silver on the sides

yeah its kinda like expecting C3PO plated finish... and receiving a candy yellow blowover instead

Interesting. Had somehow assumed Tamiya would really resolve the old gold-plating issue, but sounds as if they've introduced a whole different look in the process.

Guess prices for the originals will stay stronger than they otherwise may have. They are very hard to even find these days.

Does this mean if you hate "gold" plated stuff (like I do) that you could remove the yellow and just have chrome wheels? Or would it strip the chrome too?

yeah you can see that its gold paint over metallised silvering which has covered more evenly

gee that angle makes the paint pooling really distinct,

the holes look really "Countach telephone dial" :)

they've done the paint for some time, worse items being those matte/gold/silver SS & RR shells

(i haven't looked at a gold Lunchbox closely yet)

its usually not that wet/thick generous on the clear yellow though
