It's going well! The chassis is the easy part... now to get into some serious VW TYPE 2 T1 body action!

Cheers,

Skottoman

Thanks Skottoman, it might be a while until I do the body, I don't have any paint yet and as I have been out of work for a while I am a bit skint. I might mask off all the windows so that they have time to bond with the body all 23 of them. It comes with the full set of window masks so it should be easy enough.

Then I will spend more time watching painting tutorials on youtube, I watched a few all ready.

I decided to try the soapy water method as the little window masks are not very easy to get to.

Wasn't sure how much soap to use, so a tiny drop of fairy liquid went into this container of warm water.

Started to cut out the stickers,

There are a couple of things I don't understand, I only have the masks for half of the bumpers, it does say "mask off areas to be painted white with seperately available masking tape" but you would have thought they would provide the masks for the whole bumper?.

Also there are decals that look like head-light lenses, they are numbered 23 but there is no 23 on the decal instructions.

I wonder if this body set would fit on a Lunch Box chassis?

-Paul

Sorry Paul, I missed this earlier, I have measured the body (not very well :D ), it is around 140mm wide, not checked the length yet but will do tomorrow.

I started to cut the masks for mine by hand and decided it was going to take forever, so I scanned it, converted to vector, and cut a set on the plotter in my office!

That chassis is tiny very short wheel base did not realise motor is central, hhmmm i want one now! lol still got 3 kits to do though lol.

Edit, sorry Mr Crispy, got you mixed up with Willychang, think you have similar avatars?, well that's my excuse anyway. :D

@Mr crispy, yer some chrome parts would have been nice, some wing mirrors and a nice badge instead of the stickers.

I have cut the shell, sharp stanley knife, was much easier than I thought it would be.

Hi Lee1980, now would be a great time to buy one from fusion as they have £50 off. Most other places have it for £150. Fusion have it for £119.

ahhh dont tell me that lol, will get another 10% to think being a TC subscriber, be £ 107.10 then! bargain! hhhmm might see what else i can sell to get one.

I find myself wondering what else that chassis can be used for....

Hope you washed the shell out before you stuck the masks on? If you didn't, a paper towel with some window cleaner will help before you paint.

Yeah, you're going to have to get some masking tape to finish off the bumpers... Also the extra light decals are for if you are putting LED's in it I'd guess. One looks opaque, and the other clear.

Now masking the red/white lines will be tougher!

Keep it up!

Hi Billg4, when you say "pan car" do you mean like a mardave type car?.

What size is the Tamtech road chassis?, Is it the GT-01?

yes, or an associated 1/12 pan carthe flat fiberglass or carbon chassis types

I really do not envy anyone painting one of these, lots of prep to do just for the ''glass'' nevermind the actual paint scheme

Yes, I got 5% off my order, so proper bargain.

I didn't wash the shell, Where is the paper towel and window cleaner for? to clean the rest of the shell? or for the windows?, I dunked some of the masks under water using the soapy water decal method but didn't make a lot of difference. I thought the extra decals were just to try and replicate the glass in the headlights but not sure, also I think the "glass" decal is slightly bigger than the opaque one. Thanks for popping in Skottoman, will be a while until I update again as I have to get masking tape and paint.

Yeah Billg4 It took me most of the day cutting out all those window masks and sticking them on, the Mrs moaned loads at me when she got home because I hadn't tidied up the house but it's mostly her mess anyway, and babies mess. How do they make so much mess when they can't move?. :D

This is funny, because I can clearly see the "wash inside of shell" instructions in your post #38. :) You usually wash the shell with warm soapy water on the inside before masking, because it tends to have molding release residue.

Ususally not a big deal, but there have been times I've seen the paint not stick/bead up, in places.

Always best idea to wash the shell before you begin masking.

What I was referring to with the window cleaner, is you could spray some on a paper towel, and wipe down the inside, thus removing some of the residue, and not messing up your masking job. I wouldn't worry about this too much though...

Thanks Skottoman, I must have had a "typical bloke" moment and not bothered to read the instructions properly before getting carried away and sticking all the masks on.

It does say "preparing for painting" Wash the body thoroughly with detergent in order to remove any oil then rinse well and allow to air dry", I just assumed that as I am not painting the windows it wouldn't matter if I didn't wash them, nevermind.

Then it says "wash the body thoroughly with detergent and allow to air dry. Cut out masking stickers and mask off windows and bumper areas from inside".

Too late for me now but handy for anyone else doing this build. I will make sure I give the body a good wash before painting.

As I said, this is my first polycarbonate body so I appreciate all the help,

Thanks again Skottoman, congratulations on your 1000post, I am sure they are all useful, helpful posts unlike mine. :D
