I was a bit bored tonight and decided to start cutting up my blitzer beetle shell. I was just intending to do all the straight lines with a stanley knife and do the rest with the cotton cutting method but I got carried away and did more than planned.

Made a small mistake and snapped the quarter window frame but it's being glued as I type.

I intend to cut out the window and glue that to the door to add some strength and may reinforce any more weak points as I go.

I know this has been done before but had a quick search and couldn't find anything.

Any suggestions as to how I can hinge this door?

You could probably follow some tips from static-model builders seeing as the Blitzer Beetle has a hard plastic body. The models in question are usually 1:25, however, so a 1:10 hinge may require more work or larger parts.

I may remember a technique using piano wire... If I can recall any of these techniques I will be sure to let you know.

Edit: I am currently watching a video on how to make working hinges for models. Not that far into it yet but despite poor focus it may be worth viewing:

Thanks for your input Grastens and for the video, I am watching it now. I may just fit two small hinges where the hinge should be. I will fit them on the inside where they can't be seen.

Dubro makes small hinges for RC aircraft control surfaces. They come in a number of sizes and predrilled for screws or an easy glue in place. Normally for flat applications but that's easy to deal with.

Thanks Dave956, just had a search for them and got a few hits, thanks.

Not even sure where I will use this body now, it wont take the abuse any longer, almost every panel was cracked or heavily scratched so it's time for a change.

Look at the hinges on a die-cast model and copy them, but make a top and a bottom hinge. Most die-cast models only have one hinge on the side doors.

You will need to make out of styrene sheet, the inside frame/interior of the door, and make the pillar around the door hole to give both the door and the body strength at the opening. The more scale structure you can get inside the body will also help keep it in shape (like the dash, firewall and floor pan).

Use small neo-magnets as door latches to keep the door closed.

The body is now only suitable for slow speed scale running. A single crash will do huge damage to the detail.
