Well unless the piston rods are bent I would suggest that they can be rebuilt. The shocks are renowned for leaking oil but I understand the re-re versions are not much better, so for the price you'd pay for new you may as well rebuild the old. Anyway one way to get round them leaking is to mount them upside down.

The re-re ones leak the same as the originals. the RC Champ versions are supposeldy better but i've seen reports of them leaking too.

For shelf duty leave them dry or use heavy weight (thicker) oil.

For runner status mount upside down or use modern coil over dampers of suitable length (70mm front, 55mm rear off the top of my head but search the forum for confirmation)

I can confirm that the rears can use 55mm shocks; fronts can vary. I have seen 80mm shocks from an RC crawler company used on the front end; my own chassis uses the GB-01 Aeration Damper set all around, which at the front is just a bit under 70mm. It all depends on how much travel you want in the front suspension.

So: 70mm front/55mm rear shocks should work if you decide to use modern coil-over units.

(If using ball mounts to mount them onto the chassis, make sure they can accept 5mm ends. However, if they can only take 4mm ball mounts they can still be bolted onto the chassis)

I just installed the GB01 aeration shocks. You can still get them for $40 if you look around. I just got mine on Saturday, the springs are too soft so I still have the tension bars on. I tried the 40wt oil in my axial exo but there isn't much damping there so will need to try something thicker. It's still bouncy so I will have to find something thicker to try.

On the topic of SRB upgrades: I would definitely go for a metal chassis plate. This minimizes front chassis flex and actually allows the front suspension to work as the front no longer twists under cornering. They can get expensive but are something to consider.

im starting to lose money on my rebuild Im going to make my own chassie plate. See my galley for SRB plate I have made.
