Well, I have decided to bite the bullit, and get into this. I have narrowed down my wants to either a 2wd nsx, or a Ferrari f40. Now I see on ebay someone has just the chassis for sale, and there are other parts which seem to be for both models. My question is this-as a brand spanking new enthusiast, should I wait for a complete example to show up, and just update that, or would it be in my best interest to just put one together from scratch, seeing as how they seem kinda hard to come by.

Also, if anyone knows of any good hobby shops in the CT/NY area, let me know.

Thanks in advance.

To be honest I would say the best way to get a "classic" Tamiya car is to buy one that is complete and either new built or new in the box. It can be deceptively expensive to buy all the parts to make one up and also there are always one or two parts that you just can't find so the car remains unfinished for ages and you will lose interest.

Also if you want a car to run then it's better to get a modern car that it's still possible to get parts for more easily. If you would like a 2WD car then one of the F103 chassis Le-Mans cars would be good ( the TS-020 Toyota, or the Audi R8R, or the Porsche GT1 LM98 ) or even an F1 car with this chassis. The only thing with these is that they really need a track to drive on rather than just around the street. Or you could get a TB-01 Enzo or similar, these would be stronge enough to bash around the street but also look pretty good. The TB is 4x4 so if you wanted 2WD it's no good ( unless you leave the drive shaft out[;)]

Basically leave the classic cars to collecting and short runs and then get modern ones for driving regularly.

In generally I agree, but I think you can get also with not too much money to a classic Tamiya with buying a complete or almost complete well used one and restore it, or buy a restored one.

If you leave out the center shaft of a TB-01 you will get a special zero wheel drvie version. Motor power is lost but it goes well if you push it though. [;)]

As with most of the touring cars and the LeMans/GrpC chassis, the chassis & drivetrain is virtually indestructable and survives well. Conversely the bodyshell is the one takes the hard hits.

Are you after one to use, or just for shelf display? This would dictate what condition you want to find yours in.

At the very least I'd source one that still has a (usable) bodyshell. NIB bodyset and wheels will be hard to find for the F40; the NSX shell is even rarer. If you have one of these already then its not too hard to piece together the rest of the car; drivetrain parts are shared with the F101. Wheels are unique but any of the Indycars and perhaps even modern F103 rubber tyres & wheels might work.

These GrpC cars are still 'affordable' though... have seen used examples with shell going for eBay US100+, NIB kits are still only about $250-300 so that's pretty good.

I just do not see how taking out the two front shafts at the front end can make the TB01 a 'zero' wheel drive version.

WillyChang, thank you for your response. The car would just be something to tool around with-the only driving it would see would be the occasional run around my driveway. I figure for all my screwing around I am just going to get some type of 4wd buggy-something that can go on and off road, and keep the ferrari for looks. Theres just something about the f40 body that I love (same with all ferraris), same thing with the nsx, although it seems that the 4wd NSX are much easier to come by. And I figure as much as I like the Enzo-the F40 isnt getting any easier to find, or any cheaper, so I may as well keep my eyes on that first.

Any other thoughts or suggestions let me know.

Thanks all.

Paul

I totally agree on that one, luckiy Enzo cannnot see this creation with his name on.[;)]

Latest Enzo doesn't look too bad, honestly... but Mr Ferrari would be spinning 50,000rpm in the grave over the F50 - hideous machine, even more ugly in real life.
