Near enough a touring car wheelbase so ok on a TA01/02 or TL01. Their bodyshells are reasonable quality too, I have a Nissan 350z prepainted one on my TA01 'drifter'

Has to be an F103GT if you ask me :) The only out of the box (Tamiya) RWD chassis with touring car wheelbase and width... You could also use an M04, then lengthen the wheelbase with the extension pieces and widen it with TL01 suspension arms.

From what i read the handling on the F103GT is absolutely hopeless on anything other than kojak smooth race tracks .

Not to mention being able to have a mid-motor, rear-wheel drive hatchback! *cue Renault Clio V6*

Unfortunately that is also true...

I wouldn't be too surprised if the same goes for the W12 Golf GTI! :P I haven't driven the F103GT, so I'm not sure, but aside from the chassis design it inherited that's developed for smooth tracks, I think the low profile wheels, rear friction damper and perhaps also the upper deck (chassis rigidity) are not helping. The tire sidewalls of course you can't change, but the damper and chassis rigidity can be changed easily. Also, are you looking to have an absolutely planted car or one that's edgy like the 1:1 car I'm assuming is as well?

If you don't want that you can still use a mid motor RWD chassis like an M-04 based project ;)

The Golf GTI is a front driven car, isn't it?

Correct but this is the W12 concept car, which shoehorned a Bentley W12 6.0litre, 650bhp engine into the mid section of the Golf platform with rear wheel drive.

the Golf was featured on "top gear" a few years ago.

i think clarkson said it was useless at handling but obviously fast :)

Why the heck don't the door-window lines match the rear quarter window lines. Almost like they added in those ridiculous window visors. Not at all like the prototype Other than that, it looks pretty good. I'll hold off till I see a finished example.

That's definitely a cool shell...

Also, just to confirm it, extending and widening an M-04 definitely works:

I haven't driven it that much yet, but one thing's for sure- don't skimp on grippy rear tires :D

Thats a sweet looking chassis . i've no experiance at all of all out tarmac racers but i fancy having a go at building one . I think i'll do a SRB Sand rover first though.

To be honest, Tamiya should just bundle every M03 and M04 with a TL01 and call it the "All-car"....maybe with bonus short TL01 chassis halves.
