Removing paint from wheels

Recommended Posts

I have a set of Stadium Blitzer wheels that have being really baddly painted yellow - yuk :(. They were bought for next to nothing and the tires are only fit for the bin . I want to strip them and re paint . My question is what method to use . Would the oven cleaner work , do i need some brake fluid or is there any other product that will do the job without affecting the plastic rims ?

I've stripped wheels in the liquid oven cleaner (Tamiya and Kyosho plastics) without a problem. I've used DOT 4 brake fluid on old SRB rims, but it was very slow (in fact i forgot they were int here for 2 months and still soem paint remained). All depends what they were painted with in the first place, but modern wheels are pretty tough so oven cleaner should be fine.

Graffiti remover might be worth a try but i'd leave that til last as they are all different in nature and some just melt plastics.

Dropping them in hot water might also help lift the paint ?

Tried the hot water mate , and the dish washer . This paint looks like someone trowelled it on

The trouble with wheels is getting into the nooks and crannies, and the scratches and dents that are usually present before painting - and probably the reason for painting!

In the past, I've soaked them in white spirit (or something similar) for a bit and then used wire wool to gradually rub the paint off. It does leave them with a fairly dull finish, but it gets the paint off...

I'd probably try the Percy's oven cleaner next time...

i've got them in a bath of MPA ( industrial alcohol ) . Its working well and the paint is already starting to soften and wrinkle . Thats after 2 hours . I'll keep a eye on it but there seems to be no ill effect to the plastic .

EDIT . I had'nt realised it but these are Bush Devil wheels - sort of a dark pink . Are these rare ?

Glad the alcohol is working ok. I've used both brake fluid and a product call 'modelstrip' for stripping paint off plastics. The modelstrip is designed specifically for the job, can eat through several layers of paint, and can be washed off with cold water. It's the ideal tool for the job, but is about £7 a jar. I think the best way to describe the bush devil wheels is as 'unloved'. I don't know about rarity, but I don't think there is much demand for them due to the colour (Hence the reason they were probably painted in the first place ;) )
