Inspired by TC member def4x4's awesome 2CV, I decided I needed to give one of these a go...

http://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.asp?cid=113471&id=24711

Being a big fan of most things French, and the fact that my French buddy's girlfriend had one of these, AND when I was hitchhiking through France in 1988, I was picked up by one of these.... it needed to be done.

Finding the body was hard, but def4x4 pointed me in the right direction and I was able to get this body shipped to California from Germany. I also wanted the realistic thin wheel, skinny tire look and took another page from def4x4 with the hummer wheels and 1/14 truck tires.

I'm not even sure what chassis I'll put this on, but most likely a CC01. This will not be a fast project, because I do have a lot of ideas that will take some time. I'm not a huge fan of lexan bodies now, but I will do my best to go over the top with what I normally do to lexan bodies... There will be details, and I plan on this being a low speed runner. (They are in real life anyway!)

I'll just start posting pix... :)

Cheers,

Skottoman

I still need to add wheel nuts to the smoothed wheels... 3 each wheel to be exact! Bumpers have been cut off, to be later replaced by custom built styrene...

I've matte coated the outside of the shell, and cut the overspray film to mask the windows and keep them shiny.

I prefer this look for "older" vehicles, and there will be some weathering perhaps later. Roof will be actual canvas, which should be difficult!

looking good Buddie . Are you going for the full rally look - Dakar ? These have to be the one of the worlds most ugly cars but they are actually excelllent off road .

I wondered who'd be next to take-up the 2CV challenge and I'm pleased its you Scott as you have the imagination and patience to get the most from the Carson shell, which in general is ok but the bumpers are plain awful and have to be crafted separately to make the shell work.

Have this thread marked !

I'm not sure what style this will be. I think the main idea is for it to be a detailed version of a car that has been used a bit.

Mostly I just want it to not look like lexan, which is the hardest part...

These are not quite Tamiya quality, that's for sure, but I guess that's part of the challenge!

This going to be a fun one to watch. Though I must admit I'm not a 2CV fan. A childhood memory that still makes me chuckle - watching a 2CV, carelessly parked on sloping ground, gradually l-e-a-n further and further until it toppled onto its side. The fact that it belonged to a local teacher just made it funnier... :)

A bit more progress... This particular lexan body is a little bit on the thin side, so I'm starting reinforcements. The sides and rear aren't flat and they should be. Some well placed styrene inside should help the rigidity of the body, and make it's shape a little more defined and less wobbly.

Also, started in on some of the custom styrene... a front grill! No cheap stickers for me here! This was quite tough to make, but it looks to fit wonderfully and will help in the transformation of this little vehicle. Not to mention the "character" it will add with all the hand made styrene!

Cheers,

Scratch built front bumper to match horrible lexan molding... Also using photos as reference, but good enough.

Getting some primer on the grill... and yes, RICO and MURPH are laughin' it up in the background. They were playing some RUN DMC, and really working their buggy's subwoofers!

Wow that's great!

Should you trim a little bit the edge of the front fender?

Max

Yes, I do need to trim a little more off the front of the shell. I am waiting until I find a way to attach the bumper. The other problem here is the lexan is very thin in some areas of this mold, so I have to be very careful how I trim it.Part of the reason I don't like lexan as much, but it makes a challenge!Cheers,Skottoman

Carefully slotted out the front window vent. That was tough without mangling this thin lexan shell...

Started in on the window rubber. Hard to do on a lexan body with no real molding lines to follow.

But the effect will be needed to add to the layers of detail I plan on this thing.

Gas filler cap as well...

Great thread, Scott! You have already put more skill and quality into this model, than Citroên has ever managed to put into one of their 1:1 things.

Here in Denmark, the only people who drove these back in the days were schoolteachers and tree-huggers. ;)

Can´t wait to see more!. :D

Cheers.

Haha.... I know people don't really like these cars in real life that much, but I kind of do. Also there aren't many of these in RC, so I thought it would be a good challenge. Plus I'd really like to have one!

Working on the rear bumper. You can see in the first pic the horrible molding of the tail lights, and license plate frame.

I came up with a solution for actual tail lights, and an area I can attach a license plate to. Plus hides the hole in the lexan where the old stuff was that I cut out. It will glue to the backing styrene I already placed behind the molded boot lid.

Cheers,

Skottoman

When I lived in the Netherlands I saw many 2CV's around my neighborhood. Even my son, who was about 3 at the time, knew what they were and pointed them out. Very cool and challenging project! You've made a cracking good start :)
