I find that the RE/RE SS rear suspension is weak when I install a 7.2 hump pack to run it. I'm think about removing the rear torsion bars and installing coil-over shocks. Anyone out there install different shocks in the SS? If so what did you put on?

I noticed the torsion bars of the RE-RE Sand Scorcher rear suspension are considerably softer than the original ones. I presume Tamiya deliberately did this to deal with the new (altered in 1986) body. This allow them to lower the profile and make the car look a bit less "off", now that the fenders are not as large as the original body's. If you make a side by side comparison between the new and classic Sand Scorcher you will notice this immediately. Now regarding shocks, I think I've seen some people using the oil-filled coilover shocks from the Mini racing car as optionals. You will probably need longer screws to fit them but they will work much better than the bars.

I got some Tamiya GB-01 aeration shocks for mine. I don't have the correct springs and still use the torsion bars for primary springs but the dampers are WAY better and don't leak just sitting there overnight. I do worry about the spindly shock shafts since these shocks were originally for the tamtec 1/16 scale buggies and are about half as thick.

As the torsion bars are said to be weaker (never tried them though, neither the old ones nor the new ones), I think this may be due to the Re-Re Scorcher and Buggy Champ being rather designed for Tamiya's lighter 6.6V LiFe batteries than heavy NiCd/NiMh 7.2V hump packs.

I love my scorcher, runs great on a 2200mah 2 cell lipo, but i wish i could find some shocks that look fairly stock but don't leak. anyone tried http://www.rcchannel...products_id=287

Give rc4wd a look . They do shocks called i think ultimate dampers . They look like standard shocks but have internal springs . Good quality and mine have'nt leaked at all .

I thought I would get the RC4WD shocks a while back but noticed that they are not proper oil dampers. If you look at the specs. Near the end it says

Note: These shocks do not use oil. Use a small amount to keep the shaft lubricated only.

So you basically have a nice scale look but no damping whatsoever. I went with the 1/16 scale tamtech shocks on mine. They work well but being 1/16 scale the shafts are very thin and you need to find hard enough springs or keep the stock torsion bars on to bolster the springs on the shocks.

Antmax i can only speak from experiance but IMO the rc4wd shocks work really well . Yes their not oil dampers but they certainly do the job very well indeed.

That's cool, I just assumed that they were only sprung and would in effect be like taking the original oil dampers off and running with torsion springs alone.

I'm running the F201 dampers on mine. The bodies are narrow and work fine with the SRB. I don't find the softer torsion bars and issue.. they work fine if the dampers are actually dampening the suspension. The stock ones don't dampen at all. If the torsion bar was stiffer, the rear end becomes bouncy.

I have GB-01 3Racing Shocks on my rere Scorcher alongside the original suspension and it has sorted it right out.

I took the blue anodization off with oven cleaner to make them a little more subtle.
