Hello to all and thanks in advance for reading and hopefully adding some comments on this post :)

so, finally I have found a NIB Egress and should have it by mid week :) excited ain't a strong enough word to describe how I'm feeling....lol, plan is to build it at soonest opportunity, not like my other NIB kits I have stored away in the loft :( so question is what is the best possible set up for this Bad Boy....motor / ESC / battery etc? there is a Dyna tech motor and 45015 CPR unit on e-bay for sale but a bit pricey as you could guess :( what's your thoughts on this set up?

Looking forward to receiving some suggestions for setting up this true legend of a Buggy that it is :)

All the best

Paul.

I never had rc back in their day so I can only quote other info I picked up recently...

The CPR units aren't that great

The dynatechs need a lot of maintenance

Whilst I have both units with my egress in my showroom, mine is for the shelf only. If u was to run it I'd look for a modern esc with lipo cut off and s tamiya Tz/RZ/BZ motor or a 10.5t brushless set up

Congrats on the Egress and enjoy the build, they really are magic. I think most people would struggle to run hard a new built example, I know I would (struggle that is). I suppose you have to weigh up what you want out of the car. If you only want to run it lightly and value it more as a period correct vintage example that will get stared at a lot (deservedly), then go for the CPR and Dynatech. If you want to run it even moderately then personally, I would buy a replica body, undercowl and decals and also buy all the applicable Avante 2011 parts trees, light weight wheels, tyres etc. Build it up with these to have some real fun with your Egress and keep the original parts aside for down the track when you do want to rebuild it properly for display.

I did have a TZ in mine for a while but I've chickened out and just bought a Sport Tuned and 19 tooth steel pinion for it. I figured there was no need to put the hurt on Eggy ;)

Have fun and good luck sleeping until that box arives :D

Hahaha......yes will defo not be running it hard, too good for that, had a butchers at your Egress resto project P, great job and now even more excited to receive this little work of art :) like your thinking Thommo, safe but wise :) think I might just go for the Dyna and CPR but not yet fully convinced myself? lol will speak to a few others and see what they suggest also? thanks for the comments Guys, greatly appreciated ;)

Tick tock, tick tock goes the clock.....lol..I may even take a day off work to make sure I am in the house for the post man coming....lol

Thanks again Guys :D

In your case ( not going to kill it..looo, not running it hard ), then Dynatech and CPR 160 will be good match and gives you a great nice vintage look and satisfaction.

I am running my vanquish with Dynatech 02H and CPR 160F, and it acts superb..

Happy building ;)

The Sports Tuned turned out to be a poor choice for the Egress/Avante gearbox. The motor shaft is too short and so the pinion meshes with only 9/10's of the spur at best and that's with the grub screw only just making minimum partial contact with the flat on the shaft

I tried both a Robinson Racing and a Tamiya AV pinion with no real difference between the two other than the AV pinion has a slighlty wider tooth face so marginally more surface contact. Flipping the pinion over is a no go either.

Has anyone else experienced this with Avante/Egress/Vanquish with a Mabuchi 540 or Sports Tuned ?

#EDIT# I've just checked the Vanquish manual and the motor mount is different. It's recessed to set the kit 540 further back from the gearbox plate and with the pinion grub screw at the motor side of the shaft.

I doubt that the Vanquish motor mount will work with the Egress because of the steering servo location so I guess I either have to live with the 9/10's compromise or choose another motor. There are examples of Egress on the main page that are fitted with a silver can for vintage racing but unfortunately those members are not active on the forums.

I am still interested if anyone has any other ideas on this ? Cheers.

I would try the Vanquish mount if you can get one cheap. That or use an old Avante mount layered under your standard egress mount. The old Avante mount is the same as the Egress one except it doesn't have threaded & extended screw holes. Just plain flat plate aluminum.

Is the motor really that close to the servo?

I did run a Sport-Tuned motor on my Avante Black Special in place of the kit motor early on. I pitched it; the wires shredded themselves and I found the can too large to comfortably move it in and out of its spot on the chassis regularly, as I did (since I ran in very dusty conditions). The motor cables were under a lot of stress as the mounting position meant one was stretched to reach the ESC while the other had plenty of slack. On the kit motor with its asymmetrically-mounted cables the placement was ideal.

I actually ended up flipping the pinion (after wrecking a 22T pinion while being oblivious to the short motor shaft length) and it was able to mesh suitably, but then again maybe I accepted that 90% was 'suitable.'

And yes, the motor is in proximity to the servo, or at least the servo mount post. The motor and the rearward servo mount post are hardly further than 6 mm apart on the Avante, and the Egress does not seem much different...

Well the avante 2001 came with a sport tuned so there's something not quite right here. I have a 540sd in my vanquish, a 540vz in avante and a Parma modified still in my egress and I've not noticed this issue in any of them, all running steel pinions.

We need pics as haider says.

The old sport-tuned from the Avante 2001 and the currently available sport-tuned are NOT the same thing.

This is an image of the old motor from when the Sport Tuned first showed up on the Avante 2001: BTW: This is also a great image to illustrate the original Avante's plate-style motor mount w/o threaded holes.

The current version is painted flat black and has the stupid short rotor shaft:

That would explain so much. I have an original Sport-Tuned motor mounted in my GT-One (issued with the kit), but fitted my Avante with the newer one. It led to the pinion-mounting problem; I did manage to get it to mesh somehow but noticed gear wear despite keeping the gearboxes very well-greased.

Thanks guys. I'm away from home atm so unfortunately no pics from me but I think Sean (hope that's correct spelling ;)) has nailed it for us. The shaft on the current Sport Tuned is simply too short. It's pretty obvious from Sean's pics.
