Hi all,

I am new here on this forum. I need some help please. My son has put on his Christmas list a mk1 Escort radio controlled car !!!!!. This is looking to be a rather big challenge.

Can anyone tell me where I can purchase a shell and if all running gear for all radio controlledTamiya cars are the same.

i really want to do this for him and have not been beat as yet trying to find something, however Im stuck this time. I beg to all you good Tamiya club members for some well needed help.

Please reply if you have any information that will help me, you will make an 8 year old a very very very happy young man.

Thanks

The Retro Racing bodies are made from PET-G, and can be quite thin and fragile, especially if you use the wrong type of paint on it. They are however nicely moulded and a quite accurate moulding. These bodies are made in two pieces (to allow for undercuts) and must be joined at the A-pillar.

The stronger option is the lexan bodies made by Kamtec. These are not as accurately moulded as the Retro Racing bodies, but they will handle quite a beating.

Both bodies fit on regular 190mm wide, 257mm wheelbase chassis. TT01, TL01, TA01, TA02, TA03 etc. Cheapest 'new' method would be to buy a cheap TT01 kit, and the extra Escort body. The lad gets one chassis and two bodies to use on it depending on his mood.

Anyone know if the Retro Racing mk1 Escort shell is still available anywhere please?

Look on E-Bay for RetroRacing . He does not have anything on at the moment ! .

For a 8 year old I would go with the Kamtec option . Far less fragile and easy to replace in the event of a 'off'

But I'm 42 and the Kamtec looks like a jelly mould.!! :D

It is what it is . I would say that its all down to how well you paint and detail it . Scottoman proved this recently with his excellent lexan 2CV project . IMO if you want something enough you work with whats available and turn it into what you want .

Nice sentiment but I couldn't turn the Kamtec body into something I want as I want something that looks like a Mk1 Escort.

The RetroRacing body looks great, the Kamtec (as you say) is what it is, vaguely Escort shaped but not enough for my taste. No matter how well I detailed and painted it, it would never look like a scale model of the Escort.

I searched the Forum for '"2CV" and got no hits, could you point me in the direction of Skottoman's project, I'd be interested to see it.

Cheers.

Here you go (read the entire build thread first before looking at the showroom pics or you'll ruin the effect of just how much work he puts in), build thread: http://www.tamiyaclub.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=68247 and showroom pics: http://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.asp?cid=116842&sid=22013

You should also read the VW Samba one too (another Skottoman work of art), build thread: http://www.tamiyaclub.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=68373 showroom: http://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.asp?cid=117774&sid=22013

Stunning work, just shows what can be achieved by someone with huge amounts of skill and experience.

Love the 2CV, (used to own one many years ago). The Samba, simply amazing.

Both way beyond anything I could even hope to achieve.

Me too . There is no way I could work to this standard but my point is that with some work even a less than perfect body can be vastly improved .

Completely agree. If the Kamtek was the only thing available and I was desperate for a Mk1 then it would have to be that. Now that I've seen the RR body, which is very, very nice looking, then I'd like to get hold of one of those.

I also like Slot cars and when I wanted a parlicular model and it wasn't available I re-liveried a Scalextric car to look like the model I wanted. The result, for me, was good and I had the satisfaction of doing the job myself. I'd now like to recreate this model in 1:10 and I'd love to do it on the RetroRacing shell which is a very good shape.

I have a Retro Racing Mk1 on a CC01 chassis for a more accurate stance and suspension set up (it's in my showroom, same user name). If you go with Retro Racing, keep in mind that the wheel base is shorter than normal touring cars but longer than long M-chassis so there will be no easy drop on solution.

I don't know how to view models in members showrooms.

I clicked on members, showrooms, find a member, I then searched for B.M.T. and found his "all about me" page but I can't for the life of me find any images of his model collection.

What am I doing wrong please, thanks.

Ahhh, not me cracking up then?

Thanks for the link, that's the fella - it looks just like a Mk1 Escort and nothing like a jelly mould.

Until 8 years ago I owned a 1:1 Mk1, should never have sold it but it wasn't getting the use. I think the cheaper option is to buy a 1:10 rather than look for another 1:1 - they're getting very expensive now.

Love the yellow and black, mine was Olympic blue but the guy who bought it restored it and painted it yellow.

Hopefully I'll find a RR shell that's not silly money.

Cheers.

I used to a race a Mk2 painted like that. I actually prefer the shape of the Mk1, but if the shop had a Mk2 there I would of probably bought that instead to do a replica.

No, actually, I would of bought both :P

Dont overlook the range of Mardave 1/12 cars, larger range of shells too - including MK1 Escort saloon and van. They also have a huge racing scene in the UK - virtually every county has 2-3 clubs racing them :P

bugjammer, ... so liking your avatar. I've been considering a Mardave carbon 7 for a while now.

Shame no one knows they exist down here.
