Hello,

I've returned to modeling since the mid-80's and I had a couple questions about finishing the trucks. I have the R620, MAN 25 along with the Shell tanker and Maersk container trailer.

  • I've seen the quite awesome finish on the trucks on this site but I wanted to know what people do after painting, since the semis have so many details & raised edges: does everyone use the fine grits and then polish?
  • Also, does anyone have tips for applying the larger stickers, such as the Maersk logos? I can just see that getting the decal onto the ridged container is not going to go well for me. I've heard that Windex, soapy water, and even a heat gun/hair dryer might work, but I'm hesitant to try them unless I get another set of decals.

Thanks in advance.......

ok i can only give advice on how i get a good finish .Good prep is the main thing . make sure the surface your painting is 100% clean and perfect . Paint will not hidedefects - it only makes them even more noticeable .After spraying the primer rub down any defects you now see . re prime . Once dry ( 2-3 days ) spray your top coats thinly and evenly . After doing the top coat of base colour leave it to cure for at least a week . Once its FULLY hardened use progressively finer wet and dry paper (use it well wetted ) and then rubbing compound . Ive found Halfords automotive foam compound ideal for this . Apply it with a clean lint free cloth and work on a small area at a time . Once your happy with the finish give it a really good clean with soapy water and make sure its 100% dry . Use a tack cloth to remove any dust you might have missed . Spray it with clear coat - again i use Halfords product . Leave it for a week as before to cure and then repeat the whole rubbing compound process to get a really high gloss . Once your happy with it give it a coat of good quality automotive wax and a good buff .

As for the stickers you have the right idea - soapy water and a hair dryer work wonders - just take your time and you'll be supprised what you can do .

the real answer is time and patiance . a good finish just takes a lot of both .
