I've googled this for a while, but I can't find an answer:

Inside the original Mk1 SRB gearbox there are two "pimples" that fit into the screw holes at the pinion end of the motor. There is also an elongated one half way between them (so if the pimples are at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock, the longer lug is at 12 o'clock).

The problem is that on the end of most silver can motors there are (along with the two screw holes) four slots. This means that there aren't elongated holes at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock - that's exactly where the metal between the slots is.

So, what was the original motor that went into the Mk1 gearbox? I'd rather not remove the lug because I'm trying to keep the car original.

This should answer your query..

Thanks for the response, Percymon, but I can identify the gearbox as a Mk1 (although the Mk1 in the link you provided doesn't have the lug) - it's identifying the appropriate vintage version of the motor to suit the lug that I'm having a hard time with...

Can anyone identify this motor? It looks like it would be perfect, if it's the correct vintage (circa 1979).

That's a Mabuchi RS-540S with black plastic endbell and 2 slots. Not as old as the one with the white plastic endbell but older than the one with 4 slots and metal endbell. Just thought I'd add the info for completeness, as I just happened to be looking through my spares and found an SRB MK1 gearbox in mint condition but looks to have been bead / sand blasted as the surface has a slightly "glittery" fine textured finish.

Cheers,
