Turnigy TrackStar Waterproof 1/10 Brushless Power System 4000KV/80A

Many people here vouch for the EZRUN systems, myself included,

I don't have the motor you mention but Hobbyking are a good company with very reasonable prices, I had a Turnigy lipo from them recently.

My ezrun system is 4300kv and 35amp ESC so your 80amps should be plenty.

I have a Turnigy Trackstar 120A ESC and Trackstar 2650 kV motor installed in my 1/8 e-buggy. I'm very pleased with the performance of this setup; the ESC stays cool and the motor does not get hot. Best of all, the combo only cost around $110 from Hobby King instead of the $330 a name brand system would have cost. I would definitely give one of their 1/10 systems a try based on this experience.

I have 5 or 6 Hobbyking non branded 45/60A ESCs and various motors. I've coupled the escs with ezrun motors (4300kV) and hobbykings own black cased 540 sized motors (the 3980kV one was insane in terms of speed and torque) of differing kV ratings. I've even used some of their extremely lightbut still torquey 450 sized heli outrunner motors. I have a 3300kv 450 heli motor in my gmade R1 rock racer and its still wheelies from a standing start, whereas the previously mentioned 3980kv black motor would do full 360 back flips !

I've got about 12 cars running their 2.4ghz radio system, 6-8 cheap servos nd approx 10 lipo packs - not had an issue with any single thing from them!!

I use hobbyking alot for turnigy lipo batteries, ive looked at the trackstar range as ive only got one other brushless setup, that being the ezrun 8.5t/60 amp combo, trackstar have a good reputation and you cant fault there prices, plus read up on there site for customer reviews to ease your mind, but i say go for it.

one of my friends has a stack of hobby king 45a esc's in his old tamiya kits, they all work flawlessly , they have very smooth throttle response and get the job done , they are a quite large though, about 10mm bigger than a tamiya teu101bk for instance, the turnigy systems are great value too , they are also available under the leopard brand in bright orange anodise , TBH i have had many esc's from the likes of LRP, Novak, castle creations and they have given me problems (as in just stopping working and even catching fire or smoking badly while being used well within recommended specs) , all the Tamiya, hobby wing , hobby king, turnigy, yeah racing systems i have work perfectly without a glitch , the turnigy trackstar motors (the silver slotted can ones) are awesome , for the money i havent found a better brushless motor , over size rotor shaft and bearings , variable timing (handy for getting longer run times) and light weight. it does everything that my trinity epic duo2 does at a third of the cost!

if you can ,get any stuff from hobby king via your nearest warehouse , just in case .

have fun :D

Actually even though the EZRun 35A ESC has a lower continuous current rating, it's burst rating is MUCH higher around 380A!!! That Turnigy only has burst current of 95A which is on the low side. Also the BEC on that ESC is only rated for 1A which could be a problem if you use servos that draw a lot of current. The Jang did some tests on current draw of 540 motors and peak was around 100A.

For an onroad car it should be ok but for something like 4WD buggy or SC truck that ESC seems to barely have enough burst current for sustained driving.

Personally I'd rather go with a recognized and proven brand like Speedpassion doesn't cost $330.

By name brand I meant Castle/Novak/Tekin...

You mean overrated and overpriced name brands. Speedpassion is a world recognized name brand that isn't overpriced or overrated. In fact they're powering the current TC world champions. Sorry you had to settle for the questionable HK stuff to save a few dollars instead of the race proven Speedpassion electronics which doesn't cost $300+.

In my follow up post I was only clarifying what brands I was thinking of when I wrote my first post. In my first post I was reporting a good experience with Hobby King product to answer the op's question. I'm not implying anything good or bad about Speed Passion as I have no experience with their product, but I do have experience with Novak and Castle products.

I'm glad you like their products and have brought good information about them forward for everyone to know about. The more people share information with each other, the more we all know in the long run, and the more we all benefit.

Jilles Groskamp is the current 2012 IFMAR world champion. He is running Team Orion batteries, ESC, and motor.

Here's his setup sheet.

Rick Hohwart is the current 2012 ROAR champion in 1/10 modified touring cars. He's running LRP and Reedy electronics and batteries.

Meen Vejrak is the current 2012 TITC Thailand champion. He's running LRP batteries, ESC, and motor.

What portal are you pulling your information from?

I stand corrected...for some odd reason I was thinking back to 2010 when Marc Reinhard was champion... :P

Anyway to be more specific Hobbywing makes both Speedpassion ESCs and Team Orion ESCs....it's pretty well known in racing circles.

Hey guys, thanks for the feedback. Hope I haven't stertrd a feud. But seriously for me a 50 yr old who only runs his cars for fun in parking lots not in competition. The budget friendly option suits me fine, if I raced my cars I would want better gear. All the best Jay

dont mean to add fuel to the fire here fella's and sorry if this is going a bit off topic in your thread spencertrax ,

lets not forget that all those world class racers dont buy one esc , they get sent 50 of them , often they use an esc once , same with batteries etc, so IMO its not the smartest decision to buy a system just because the company has a presence in the world class racing scene,

as i mentioned in my previous post ,the name can mislead you into thinking that 'they must be good'

HK esc's 3of3 0 failures,

HW esc's 2of2 0 failures ,

yeah racing esc's2of2 0 failures ,

tamiya esc's 12of12 0 failures ,

novak esc's 3 of 3 total failure ,

LRP esc;s 6of6 total failures ,

castle sidewinder sv2 2of2 partial failures ,

to quantify that is 100% failure rate of the well known brand names and 0%failure of the 'questionable' HK and other budget esc's , so spending the extra on the more expensive ones was the 'actual ' false economy , considering spencertrax is, like me, just a hobby driver these day , the cheaper systems are by far the more sensible and reliable option , but thats just my 20 years of rc experience and others may be different.

all the best with your choice spencertrax ,sure you will love the brushless experience , it has IMO transformed the rc industry . ;)

Lots of good info here, thanks for the discussion guys! I'm after a brushless system so I'll pop over and have a look at Hobby King :)

Turnigy TrackStar Waterproof 1/10 Brushless Power System 4000KV/80A

I bought this exact combo. It has an on/off switch and a small button next to it, I cant figure out how to set throttle/brake/neutral and they dont come with instructions.

:edit: I also ordered a 120a/2100kv for a mates Kyosho DBX, but not sure how that is going to work out.

i think they all set up this way.

Thanks for that alfagta, I figured it was throttle position and the button pushing, similar to most escs. Unfortunately after 10-15 minutes of tinkering it

went something like this: Theres two LED's, one blue one red. Hold throttle in reverse and hold setup button on (for the continuation of the setup) while turning on esc, esc comes on with red LED and red LED flashes indicating reverse is set, hold throttle in forward and blue light flashes indicating forward is set, let go of throttle and both LED's will flash indicating neutral is set.

Let go of setup button and turn esc off again and on and check throttle settings.

It's even harder when it's 3am and your transmitter (acoms mk5) doesn't specify whether the servo reversing switches are in N or R and not sure which way round your motor wires should be haha

Posted

I did, but would plug them back in just to check which way i had the servo reversing switch, as there is no marking on the Tx to tell me N or R.

And I had to be quiet otherwise me trying to setup a noisy lunchbox at 3am would have resulted in a thick ear for waking Mrs Berman up

Hi all I'm looking to install an EZRun brushless combo into my boomerang. Could anyone recommend which combo kit I should buy. I've had a look on ebay and there are a number of possible choices. I need some guidance regarding motor turn and ampage.

EZRun 35A ESC, motor could be anything under 4300KV or higher than 9T.

I wouldn't put a 35A ESC in a heavy 4wd Boomerang, unless you are running a 3000/3300kV motor (ca 13.5T), and even then it might not be ideal.Look for at least a 45A ESC, preferably a 60A ESC if you want to run 4300kV - the cost of the ESCs isn't an awful lot, so why buy the cheapest one ?

i can heartily recommend the hobby king X-car 60A (the green one) with usb dongle , coupled to a 13.5t motor (trackstar or x-car) and you have a truly killer sensored system for just under £50 shipped , :)
