As title says, someone just posted an ad on a local website with the following vintage Kyoshos for sale, all NIB!

Turbo Optima mid

Javelin

Vanning

Gallop MKII

Optima

Turbo Optima

So how much could those be worth? Some of those cars are on ebay, but they've been there for a long time so obviously overpriced. How much would you offer?

I have no idea since its a local ad, but he did put up pictures and they're new in the box (boxes have been opened). He's about 30 minutes away from where I am. He says to make an offer, no asking price. The javelin is the one I want, but I would consider buying them all and reselling them on ebay if the price was right. If you guys are interested I could buy them for you and send it your way. Here's a link to the ad:

I would imagine if the seller has that as his collection he will be well aware of eBay prices, and what sells and doesnt.

I've seent he same Gallop MkII advertised over a period of 3-4 months at anything from £800 down to £500. The last two Javelin NIB to sell on Ebay went for £622 and £777

There's a turbo Optima NIB on ebay at 1500$ now, that's a lot of money in my opinion. In the 600-700$ range though I would be willing, I just sent him an offer and we'll see

The Turbo Mid, if offered on a BIN on ebay, would be at least £800. If it were offered up for auction it would probably fetch around the £600 mark. They are becoming very, very pricey now.

Posted

despite all this, if you were willing to pay X you could just buy it on ebay. so i'd consider offering 60% of what you think the auction price would be. same day, cash in hand. negotiate from there if necessary. you aren't desperate, if the deal isn't good enough you can get it anywhere...

Posted

I offered 600$ for each car, had to negotiate this with my wife. But he replied later today and said no. I'm not willing to pay any more than that so that will be the end of it. I seriously doubt he can sell this locally, probably better off on ebay.

Most people seem to want way more than what things are actually worth  I have to laugh every time I see some new NIB vintage item listed on eBay, for some insane price with no precedent.

And then watch it sit there on eBay for months. And months.

And months...

And months...

And months...

And months...

And years.

As Percymon said, this seller must know the values of what he has. But if he expects top dollar, he's even less likely to find a buyer on some random country-specific classified site listed under "toys and games", than he is on worldwide eBay.

Still, I guess it found it's way here...

Oh, and as for "what would you pay"...

IMHO, people - me, you, everybody - should only pay amounts that have a precedent under no-reserve, open eBay auction conditions.

For example. If something last sold fair and square for around $500 on eBay under bidding-war conditions, I'm not going to pay $1000 buy-it-now for that same item 6 months later on eBay just because the next one available is the only one available, and the seller thinks he has a hot ticket to big cash.

So just research eBay. Make the best use of their pathetic, money-grubbing 60 days worth of "completed auction" sales data as you can, and try to note - or at least mentally note - the final values of things. And try to avoid paying 3 times the market value the next time something rare comes around. :)

cheers,

H.

To be honest I don't blame him for turning down your offer, but there is nothing wrong with trying your luck I guess.

Under auction conditions I'd expect the following prices for an Optima Mid, as to me this is their true current value:

Standard Mid - $800 to $1100

Turbo Mid - $1100 to $1300

Turbo SE Mid - $1300 to $1600

The guy currently asking $3000 for the Turbo SE on ebay is a good example of the type given by Hibernaculum above. If it stays at that price it will still be there in 5 years time.

I do wonder how wise it would be, to spend up to $1000 on a NIB Mid (for example). Because, yes they are highly sought after by guys of our generation, due to when they were originally released, and the nostalgia value to us. But say in, 10-15 years time, when most of us current enthusiasts will probably have other priorities, then who will these kits appeal to?

Don't get me wrong, I'd flippin love to buy them all if I could!

You've just frowned on about 90% of people's buying choices of people on this club over the last 10 years! In reality, $1000 is actually chicken feed compared to the $4000 still routinely paid for stuff like Blazers & Black Porsches.

Congratulations mate, an excellent price indeed in the current market! Where did you buy it?

I picked it up on Ebay Sunday night! I was looking around at cars, I am sure you all know what that's like, and saw he had it listed for $1200 OBO. I thought heck why not offer 700 and see what happens? As soon as I hit confirm it said I won. I had to look again I thought I read it wrong but he accepted it. It was on Auto Accept because it accepted it instantly. Hey it doesn't hurt to offer low, worst they can say is no. I actually feel bad offering that low but it worked out in my favor this time! When I receive it I will post pics

I was thinking now that I have that and a fairly nice regular Optima ( needs cleaning ) i would live to have the entire Optima line as shelf Queens. How cool would that be?!

And these sort of numbers are exactly why I'll never have a NIB vintage kit of anything, unless I get lucky and stumble across one completely outside the hobby. If I can get a clean occasional-runner Mid for $100, there's no way I could justify 7-10 times that amount for the same parts still in blister packs.

And even if I did, I'd rip them open, build it, run it, and give all the collectors on here a heart attack, and I can't be responsible for that. ;)

I don't have any NIB, all my RCs are restored, with the exception of a new built vintage Avante. Would have loved to get those, but its just too expensive for me, have other priorites, kids, wife, house renovations, etc....

Now that is interesting... the exact same list of kits is currently up for sale on Craigslist in Las Vegas. My dad lives there, so I asked him to contact the guy and find out what he was asking. He said he wanted $4500 for all six.

Here's the question, however: is it the same guy trying to sell the same models in a different city? Or is it somehow a scam?

Here is the link to the listing. Are these the same kits?

http://lasvegas.craigslist.org/tag/3645671595.html

(not ebay, so technically not a rules violation... or is it? if so, I apologize)

Seems like the same guy, same description. Your best bet would be to get your father to go look at them if you're interested. This could be a scam for sure, Las Vegas is a long way from Montreal.

Posted

I wanted to see if he'd sell me only the Javelin, but he kept insisting on keeping them together as a lot. Suspicious thing #1. Also, he didn't say anything about the kits themselves in his emails, only wanted to talk price. You know how we all are; the cost is secondary to the stories we all have about the car we had/wanted/sold back in the day. And no offer to come check them out. Suspicious thing #2.

So then, I remembered this thread, and went back to look to see what the consensus was about prices, and get some idea about making him a stupid-lowball offer just for kicks (like $1500 for the lot), and lo and behold, it's the exact same list of kits. Red flag.

All of this leads me to believe that, if the kits are in fact in this guy's possession, and legally so, they're not physically in Las Vegas. Or Montreal for that matter.

We told him forget it. The whole thing may be legit, but it may not. I'm not going to be the one to find out.

Lol! Amazing what some people will try to pull off. For 4500$, you can be sure I would have to see everything in person before handing out that much money.
