Li-Po stick packs that fit tamiya

Recommended Posts

hi all, I thought it may be useful to start a thread dedicated to li-po stick packs that fit Tamiya cars as I haven't seen any detailed single source for this issue, please do add links if you have seen one elsewhere , I think I would useful if you could give any details about fit and if you had to make any mods to get the pack to fit , I have only tried the yeah racing 3200 2s li-po packs ,they are a bit too long but workable and have proven to be quite strong and reliable , I had to use cable ties to hold them in the mad bull , for the M chassis I ended up using the quick release battery holder with 6mm of spacers on each side , I used cable ties to get it to stay in the king cab too , will add more as I try them :)

Resurrecting a slightly old thread but thought I'd add my tuppence worth!

I've recently tried an Overlander 3250 LiPo Sport Track:

http://www.modelsport.co.uk/overlander-7.4v-25c-3250mah-lipo-sport-track-pack/rc-car-products/364603

To get it to fit my DT02 Holiday Buggy I had to do quite a bit of creative dremelling, and without further mods it won't fit my Lunch Box (too long) and I'm not prepared to go cutting up other cars. Looks to be even less chance of it fitting my TL01B (too wide and too long).

I've been looking at the other batteries mentioned in this and other threads (e.g. Jamara) and it seems without paying silly money to get sent from Germany there aren't any UK options.

I have found this Core RC battery though and at 134mm long there maybe hope:

http://www.modelsport.co.uk/core-rc-4000mahr-7.4v-20c-lipo/rc-car-products/366384

Has anyone had any success with the Core RC?

Not tried them myself yet but these look promising, are UK based and I've had good service and quality from Vapextech for a good number of years now.

RD330- 2S2P-7.4V 3300mAh-30C

1. Dimension: 137mm*46mm*25mm Hardcase (Car 7.2v Pack Size)

137mm means these batteries are slightly too long for most of Tamiya's stickpack-sized battery compartments, where the max. length is 134mm. :(

Has anyone tried the Turnigy nano-tech 4200mah in any old school cars? The price is so good it's almost worth a try.

I don't believe any advertised pack measurements. For one they always seem to be generic & differ from site to site (for the same product)... And B, you can always file all the cell-shaped nubs off the bottom of the pack. So long as it fits in the other two directions.

BTW: I have an orion 2400 that fits most of my old cars (hotshot & Vanquish). I think it's 20mm tall at most w/o nubs, but I can't remember. Also the intellect 3800/35C is very short and about 20.5mm w/o nubs (22.5 w/ them) and has a stick-pack shape. Keep in mind these are 4mm bullet packs so you typically have to ream two holes through the chassis to plug them in (I did on the Vanquish). The hotshot didn't need any modification.

Neither of those packs fits my JRX-T. That truck only wants a side-by-side of nickle cells.

The 4200 above are closest I have found but not a direct fit. I made one fit my madbull quite easily though .

Just looked at the Core RC one again and it's quite a low C rating, but seems to tick all the boxes otherwise:

134mm - Check

Hardcase - Check

Rounded edges - Check

Ok, just taken delivery of the Core RC battery and I can confirm that it fits in the lunch box perfectly with no modifications, stretching bits or nothing!

:)

Only problem, got a new esc at the same time that must of been faulty as it took off uncontrollably with smoke pouring out of it

I ended up getting various packs for different cars, all my packs are turnigy though.

these are fitted in my cars.

thunder dragon http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__23134__Turnigy_nano_tech_Shorty_4200mah_2S2P_65_130C_Hardcase_Lipo_Pack_ROAR_APPROVED_.html (had to dremel the battery compartment a little to fit the square battery but gives bags of run time.

hornet and grasshopper http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__11910__Turnigy_nano_tech_2200mah_2S_25_50C_Lipo_Pack.html soft pack but wrapped up in a little bubble wrap to protect it.

scorcher either the 4200 as the thunder dragon or the 2200mah same as hornet, both fit perfect.

brat either the 2200mah same as hornet etc but i have one fitted in a old 7.2v tamiya hump pack hard case, protects it with it being underneath the chassis or i also use this one http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__15520__Turnigy_3800mAh_2S1P_7_4v_25C_hardcase_pack.html

blackfoot same batteries as the brat.

hotshot uses either the 2200mah soft case or the 3800 same as the brat.

fav uses the 2200mah soft case pack.

stadium blitzer uses the 3800mah hard case, although i had to extent the battery strap to make it a little higher, or the soft cased 2200mah.

luncbox uses the 4200mah hard cased pack or both the soft cased 2200mah and the one fitted in the 7.2v battery case.

cc01 uses the 4200mah hard cased pack or the 2200mah soft cased.

Has anyone tried the Turnigy nano-tech 4200mah in any old school cars?

I have four of these. I mainly bought them for my savage xs but the discharge rate isnt quite enough (borderline).

They are a super tight fit length wise in a lunchbox chassis, but they do fit, you have to be quite forceful with fhe door but you can get it closed and the pin on.

Its too fat to fit the King Cab chassis, too tight through the inner sections of the tube (i think the chsssis shrinks slightly where the battery tray and chassis meet) So the battery wont slot.

Doesnt fit the Juggernaut, too long. cant remember if I tried the TXT-1...

Havent tried the M03 but will do when I get home, would hazard a guess at 'no' though.

If anyone would like me to try this pack in any other chassis in my showroom, just ask.

I was just looking at those batteries then found this thread. I have used Vapextech before for my nimh packs and am over the moon with them. Decided to look at switching over to lipo as I snapped my nimh pack when i crashed my m03 fiat 500

TBH I would rather buy from Vapextech purely on the back of my previous experience with them.

Well I have been happy with vapextech using their nimh's but recently purchased a 4000mah 40c lipo from them for my blitzer beetle. Thought the dimensions were good to go, until It arrived!

Needless to say all is well after a little side chassis mod, in fact it looks "like it grew there" as the saying goes!

Really happy with the peformance and of the BB in general, it being my first foray into 2WD in a long while and also my first "new" purchase for myself in a longer while!

Just need to sand bag the front end a little to take the balance back up front what with it running a Ezrun 9T on a 13t pinion.

Would help to keep the wheelies to a minimum! I will also look at modding a wheelie bar at rear just in case pretty soon too ^_^

p.s. reckon I will look at the nano's next time, don't want to have to mod every chassis, but the battery was worth it this time... hope this helps others.

Nicely done, Foxone!

I had to modify the battery pack holders on my Blackfoot because the wires coming out of the Vapex lipos aren't in the middle. They fit really well, otherwise!

It appears that the Vapex site isn't entirely accurate with the dimensions anyway - the 4000mah 7.4v Lipo on their site is listed as 138mm, but is actually around 135mm:

20130523_2226591024.jpg

I've found it with their Ni-MH batteries as well - the 3700mah was listed as 139mm but is actually closer to 130mm!

The main thing is, they're great batteries and they are Tamiya sizes!

Thanks! How about not only the case length, but the total length including the smaller case portion were the wires come out of the battery? :) Or does it use a special plug system, as the name implies?

Hi Greg,

There isn't a bump at the end of the pack where the wires come out, like you get with traditional packs, it's flush:

20130524_070942.jpg

Basically, the connectors you get (Tamiya, TRX and deans) have a male deans connector at the battery pack end, which plugs into a female deans connector in the battery pack.

Because the connectors for power and balance charge aren't in the middle, the bracket on my blackfoot had to be modified to accomodate this:

The sticker is a little out of date! :D

Thanks a lot! Your photos are very helpful for checking if this battery might or might not fit to some chassis, especially regarding the connector system. I guess your car isn't the original Blackfoot, but a BFIII/BFX on the WT-01 chassis.

Correct! it's a BFIII :)

Seemingly one of the limitations of the WT-01 chassis, is that it can only take the rounded packs, not ones which are squared off. I'd have to relocate the battery If I want to fit squared off shaped Lipo batteries.

Also bear in mind that the connector leads which come with the Vapex lipo are quite thick and not very flexible where the deans connector goes into the pack (which may be why Foxone had to cut a hole in his chassis?)

I found a battery pack that is 134mm long (allegedly, as the manufacturer says 134mm, some websites say 138mm) and has a hard case and has round sides and looks like it may fit (need to check the width and height yet also), and it's LiFe chemistry that suits me (for safety) and is 6.6v and 2800mAh, and is a "reasonable" price, and the wires exit in the correct place ;-

http://gsisandbox.globalsignin.com/magento/index.php/batteries-chargers/lithium-batteries/yuntong-yt90099-6-6v-life-2800mah.html

http://www.yuntong-batt.com/plus/view-294-1.html

Yuntong YT90099. Have just e-mailed the seller (Red Dot RC, Singapore) to ask them to measure the one they say (on their website) that they have in stock for the length of the case, and how much for cheapest Air postage to England (both insured and not insured). Since it's over 15 quid there might be VAT and clearance Fee to pay though which would suck.

I found a couple of other packs that would suit but are Lipo (I have safety concerns about them) ;-

http://www.gensace.com/epages/genspow.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/genspow/Products/B-25C-4000-2S1P-HardCase-8

http://www.venom-group.com/20C-2S-4000mah-7-4v-LiPO-for-Tam-ROAR-UN.html?sc=9&category=19506

...says 138mm but I wondered since it mentioned as being for "Tamiya". Probably too long though?

http://www.modelsport.co.uk/core-rc-4000mahr-7.4v-20c-lipo/rc-car-products/366384

...that last one is interesting as it appears to tick all the boxes for most people, as mentioned, length is 134mm and it's got round sides. Note where the wires exit. Also note that the wires exit as 2 wires both in the horizontal plane relative to each other, versus the e.g. Turnigy and others mentioned earlier where the 2 thick battery wires are vertically stacked relative to each other. The original Tamiya 7.2V racing pack has the 2 wires put horizontal relative to each other.

The Core-RC #157 and #158 battery packs are from Schumacher ;-

http://www.msuk-forum.co.uk/topic/116793-core-rc-lipo-sport-packs/

The #157 ones are cheaper, at 26 quid compared to the #158 one at 34 quid ;-

http://www.fusionhobbies.com/products/li-po-battery-packs-for-cars

However, the cheaper one seems to be discontinued now?

Cheers,

Alistair G.

Fusion Hobbies just confirmed to me that the CR157 by Core-RC (the cheap one) is no longer available. Only the CR158 is available, at 36 quid (less the 10 per cent discount, and plus 3.50 delivery).

I was hoping to pay less than 20 quid including delivery for a LiPo since I am a cheapskate (Hobby King's prices are astonishing) but I can't find anything really cheap in LiPo that fits my Frog runner as well as my 7.2V Tamiya Racing Pack 1200mAh NiCd...

Regards,

LSM

I know I keep harping on about these - but while a tight fit I have had no issues fitting them in any of my Tamiyas (TA03F, Bush Devil, Thunder Dragon, Boomerang, Lunchbox, High LIft, M05, Globe Liner etc apart from having to occasionally modify the holder (like on the TA03)

http://www.componentshop.co.uk/2200mah-7-4v-35c-deans-10944.html

Under budget and perfect for the job :)
