My Blitzer Beetle thread as promised.

Recommended Posts

Today I started the job on the Sand Scorcher body.

Just sanded the moulding lines and closed the Scorcher holes on the bonnet and on the roof.

I used the soldering iron technique so no putty or filler of any sort is needed.

Then I sanded the cloded holes and the work is finished.

Next days will solder the orange nosecone to the body and then will paint it.

It's surprisingly fast make a new body. I'm so used to work on destroyed ruined old bodies to restore ( http://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.asp?cid=120836&sid=24 ) with many works to do that is seems too easy works on a new body.

Holes filled.

Sanded. They need now the primer and then the paint.

Hi mates,

This is my 3th week without Internet and telephone at home due a failure. I don't believe it. I'm writing with the mobile now. The job on the body is almost finished. Will post new pictures asap.

Finally this evening I'm back on the net.

So these are the news about this Blitzer Beetle that is slowly going on.

The next step is the nosecone that I welded to the body. Now the nosecone and the body are one piece and the part is very solid.

You can see the welding line.

Have you just run a soldering iron along the join there Max or is it a bit more involved than that?

I used two different techniques for the holes and the join.

For the holes I used the soldering iron and a PolyStirene wire.

For the join I used another technique called friction welding:

I used a dremel with a PolyStirene wire as a tool.

Wow! That is amazing. I would never have guessed you could even do it that way. Will have to give that a try.

Can you use parts tree plastic sticks, or do you have to use styrene?

I used the parts tree plastic sticks, why not? Or if you have not it you can use the Styrene wires.

The added value of this technique is that putty is no more needed to finish the job.

I simply cutted away the excessive plasticin the weld line you can see in the pictures, sanded and painted without any problem. I forgot to make pictures without the primer. Doh!!!

The next pictures are the front end of the body sanded and primed.

Wow again! That is the coolest thing I have seen. Why have I not seen this before? Surely everybody should be doing this?

I am going to have to give it a go just for fun!

And it's really solid, better than any glue. The two parts became only one.

Glad that you´re back Max!

And you have not been lazy on your Tamiya´s! Very cool work with the friction welding!

Never dared that so far. Any hints on the Dremel´s rpm? Really fast, or some midspeed?

Is there a point, where the material gets burned, if you´re running too fast?

Seems I have to make some tests!

Keep on the topwork,

Matthias

I used the faster speed and the material didn't but, it only melts. Then depends from your hand what you do with the material. If you move the hand faster the welding line will be thinner. You must have to make some tests because the good result depends only from what you feel with your hand.

Anyway, here some other pictures of the body work.

As I said in some other thread I decided to keep the boxart design but not to use the decals. So here's the first step of the paintjob.

Ok, time for a new update.

Masking the body after al color parts done. It was not so easy make the yellow, orange and green parts in the correct position on the body.

Now I made the masks to paint the black. The masks must have the same stickers design so another complicated job.

I cannot wait to see the finished result, that is truly a labour of love, and I am sure it will be worth the effort.

Thank you mates.

I had few time to dedicate to the hobby and in this period of my life I have less money than time to dedicate to the hobby. Anyway I try to resist and I continue to practice it, when I can and how I can do it.

I admitt this is not a good period but your kind words help me to continue.

Thanks everybody.

Max,

that is really great. Restricting the money for the hobby doesn´t seem to stop you from doing perfect jobs like your Blitzer paint scheme! Great work, and no nerving peel off of the front stickers after some time!

Hats off,

Matthias

Well, the work is going on ahead.

I gave three clear paint layers to my Blitzer Beetle body and polished it.

Here the result:

BB44_zps0ae488ce.jpg

BB48_zpsd3002383.jpg

BB50_zpsb1dfdaa2.jpg

BB49_zps1ddeebf8.jpg

Front lamps are in place also with the windows. I found a vintage windows part so my Blitzer now has the rear window also. The new re-release hasn't due the part is from Sand Scorcher mould.

As you can see I replaced the tires with Pro Line Road Hawgs that have a better grip imho. I cutted and narrowed the front one for a better fit on the front wheels, a better look and I think a better grip balance.

Many things to do still on this body.

Need to apply the stickers, the VW logo on the bonnet, the rear lights, the number plates and obviously the driver.

Yet I don't know if I'll create a complete interior set, maybe in a second time, who knows.

Some more spare parts are coming from Stella and I hope they will arrive soon.

They are the complete titanium turnbuckle set, they cost some dollars from Stella Models.

The next steps will be the lexan body and the power plant.

All colors are Tamiya acrylics, don't remember the numbers now. Will write them tomorrow now I'm out of home.

Anyway many hours of work but the result (not perfect) worth it.
