Is the AYK motor smaller physically than the 540 in the buggy you just bought? If so the 20t ESC will handle it just fine

FYI I have a ESC/Motor/Battery setup for sale that would be great in a buggy- only downer about the ESC has no reverse (racing no motor limit- Novak GTX ESC, Trinity D6 540 brushed motor, and Duratrax 4600 7.2)

I believe the Magnum 300LB was a 550 sized motor (longer can length , normally more torque than equivalent 540 motors)

A bit more info i found...

they are similar to the Kyosho Magnetic Mayhems , which are 22T, 550-size motors which are slightly faster than stock, but have massive amounts of torque. Unfortunately the KMMs aren't rebuildable, although you can replace the brushes, and they come with 15 degrees fixed timing.

Not sure it helps much but perhaps a modern 550 sized motor of 20-22Turns would be equivalent - you might be able to find spcs for something along these lines on Graupner's website ?

maybe this is close ???

I'm at work at the moment, but from memory I think the AYK is a bit chunkier than the standard 540 motor. I bet it's a torque-y motor with less than 20T therefore the ESC won't be able to handle it. I need to know for sure really.

There must be someone out there with some info. I did find a thread about AYK Motors from years ago but the guy who had all the knowledge hasn't been online for a while it seems.

RETRO R/C was the guy, but he hasn't posted anything since May 2012.

I see like Percy said it is likely a 550 size motor then.. A fairly cheap replacement ESC that will handle it would be the Traxxas XL2.5 or XL5 they have a motor limit of 12T in 550 size. I personally like the XL2.5 for it's smaller size and basically same features as the XL5 PLUS the Traxxas ESC's are water proof (XL2.5/XL5- the XL1 is not)

The Traxxas XL2.5 is far from cheap in the UK, although i have recently won 2 separate auctions from an American eBay seller for good prices

This is the spec..

XL-2.5 Waterproof ESC Features

  • Innovative waterproof design
  • 10-turn motor limit for 380 size motors
  • Fully-proportional forward, reverse, and braking control
  • Programmable with three drive profiles:
    • Sport Mode – Fwd / Brake / Rev
    • Race Mode – Fwd / Brake
    • Training Mode – 50% Fwd / Brake / 50% Rev

    [*]EZ-Set® push-button setup

    [*]Multi-color LED

    [*]Thermal shutdown protection

    [*]Efficient, low-loss MOSFET design

    [*]High-capacity heat sink

    [*]Smooth, high-frequency operation

    [*]Easy installation in Traxxas models

[*]Backed by the Traxxas Lifetime Electronics warranty

You could probably use this with a 550 motor provided its 22turns or higher, particularly in a lightweight buggy like the Grasshopper.

Note - There are a few reports of the XL-2.5 not liking li-po batteries (bit strange since they quote up to 8cell NiMH - 9.6V versus 7.4V for 2S lipo). The XL2.5 in my 1/16th Traxxas eRevo packed up recently, hence why i bought another , but if there had been more room in the chassis i would have gone with a mtroniks/modelsport ESC to be honest.

The other XL2.5 was destined for a very light pan car chassis, but thats now going brushless using a small helicopter type motor.

Yes 10T 380 size but it will handle a 12T 550- that info is straight from Traxxas's website.. it's why I like them, small, waterproof, can handle power, and easy to use

RCmart.com has them for $50 brand new but yes you can get them in the USA for cheaper ($35 or so)

XL-2.5 LVD Waterproof ESC Features

  • Built-in two-stage low voltage detection (LVD)
for Lithium Polymer (LiPo) battery use
  • Innovative waterproof design
  • 12-turn motor limit for 550 size motors
  • 10-turn motor limit for 380 size motors
  • Fully-proportional forward, reverse, and braking control
  • Programmable with three drive profiles:
    • Sport Mode – Fwd / Brake / Rev
    • Race Mode – Fwd / Brake
    • Training Mode – 50% Fwd / Brake / 50% Rev

    [*]EZ-Set® push-button setup

    [*]Multi-color LED

    [*]Thermal shutdown protection

    [*]Efficient, low-loss MOSFET design

    [*]High-capacity heat sink

    [*]Smooth, high-frequency operation

    [*]Easy installation in Traxxas models

[*]Backed by the Traxxas Lifetime Electronics warranty

I have one in my collection of motors.

Mine came from RETRO R/C is a modified 540 type and reminds me of a Le Mans 480 Gold.

The biggest problem with any brushed motor over 10 yr s ( and that's pushing it) is the magnets have lost their strength therefore the performance is just not there .

Know anyone into slot cars? That don't matter I guess as long as you know where a slot car race track is.. go there and ask them if they do magnet zapping.. (in the case of weak magnets in a rebuildable motor)

hi,

the block things are the brushes , for connection , if you look at your bottom pick there are two tabs that have solder on at the top of the end bell (opposite the capacitor(orange thing), just take two wires off an old motor with bullets and solder them onto these two points on the ayk . ;)

that depends on how hot the motor gets , its all relative ,running on grass always demands more of the motor than smooth dirt or tarmac, also if the car has ball race bearings rather than bushes the motor will have an easier time ,

the GH is a lightweight car so the motor should be ok with a 19 but its always wise to pull the car over after 30 seconds then after a couple of minutes when a different motor is being used for the first time and see if you can keep your fingers on the motor , it should be hotish but not enough that you cant touch it .

hope this helps,

;)
