Hi all, at christmas I built a re re boomerang and installed the standard tamiya teu-bk101 esc and mabuchi 540 motor. It runs quite nicely but now it's time to inject a bit of pace into her. The choices I've narrowed it down to are 1)a hpi thunderbolt 15 turn motor fitted with a 13 or 15 tooth pinion gear coupled with an etronix probe plus esc and a 3700mah battery 2)a hobbyking brushles b2 system - 9 turn 35A motor fitted with a 13 or 15 tooth pinion gear withcorresponding esc again powered by a 3700 or possibly a 4300mah battery. I would like your thoughts on this matter, I don't race my cars just run them for fun with my daughter on the weekends. What would be the pros and cons of each choice. Thanks in advance Steve.

Brushless require basically zero maintenance, so depending on how often you run your boomer, you will get trouble free running. Not sure on the Saturn motor, but basically a brushed motor requires brushes, and quite possibly commutator lathe, that's if it is rebuildable, if not then its in the bin when worn out.

Yep Brushless motors are the go.

At Boondal we all run 13T EZ Run brushless combos with a 15t pinion in all the Shots based cars. The tranny is fine with ball racing. I upgraded my centre drive shaft to the Hot Shot Re re alloy shaft which is far better with the extra load.

Brushless is better in a 4wd as well. They can handle the strain of 4wd drag better too.

Cheers for the info mad racer. So you wouldn't recommend going down to a 9 Turn brushless motor would you. The only reason I ask is that I have a super hotshot that has the EZRun 9 Turn brushless motor and esc set up and I'm worried that the super hotshot won't take the power in the gears and prop shaft.

not sure about the boomer but the gearbox on my blitzer runs fine after almost a year with a 9t 4370 kv fitted using 2s . touch wood its being 100% reliable . how the gears compare to those in a boomer quality wise i dont know but others can advise you on that . IMO i'd say try it - worse case you strip the gears and their not a huge expence to replace .

@Bromvw, go 3s in your blitzer, the gears hold up fine, it's everything else that breaks. :D when you are skidding on the roof at 40mph.

being there - done that  Thats why its awaiting a rebuild and body number three having had the original one , a re re scorcher and a buggy champ . Next one will be Kamtec lexan for sure

Keep the current ESC and instal a tamiya sport tuned motor.

If you want to go brushless look fir at least a 45A ESC, or better still a 60A one. 13t brushless will similar performance to a sport tuned motor at three times the price.

Ok , i know the gear box will hold fine with brushless .

As i had a 5.5 in mine & that was nut'z .

The only thing i didn't do was put in the thrust washers in

& that screwed it up . ( Still had the plastic ones in , but went for a long time )

So i put in a 10.5 in & that goes great , But i have turned it down

that much , That a 13.5 would be better .

So make sure you have ball raced all of the car & robinson racing

steel pinion . It also depends on what track you are using it on , or

what you want to use it for .

I also use li-po batterys 7.2 4000 ...

You can't go wrong with a boomerang :P ...

I just worked a deal on a boomerang, and this is great info fellas.

I was looking at the new CC SWv3 and the 3700(?) motor combo. for $110 it's a pretty good deal.

I run a 19t brushed motor with a 12T ESC but with an 8.4 battery as these will fit, it makes it a lot quicker and a cheap way of getting more speed even with a stock silvercan

I'm running a Mamba Max Pro and Tekin 13.5 in my Boomerang at the moment and LOVE IT.

I have a feeling that most of my cars are going brushless....

Ansmann 15turn and mtronicks RV12 esc. Cheap reliable and twice as fast as the original. Bearings are a must :-) add a good 3300mah battery or higher and great power and running time.

In the UK this setup is only £30 plus £8 for the bearings. £15 for the battery so a lot cheaper than brushless. When the motor is done its only £7 for a new one ;-)
