If you are going to run it then i'd suggest you go for a re-re, if only because the plastics will be newer and less brittle - parts are plentiful so no worries there unless you really wanted the Super Hornet

Hmm it's a good point; thank you.

I don't know what it is, but something's telling me I'd appreciate a dusty vintage one more than a squeaky clean, perfect, modern one

I know what you mean - there is additional pride in rescuing something in a poor state - I've had a lot of basket cases !

I would recommend scooping up a hopper/hornet off of eBay. Doesn't matter if it a re re or vintage. They are cheap, when I was looking for a parts car to help with the resto of my grasshopper from childhood, for my son Wyatt, I picked up a hornet for about $20 on eBay. I ended up piecing together a car for myself after I had Wyatt's restored.

So, I think you could get a decent car, or two to restore into a runner for your son. I searched eBay and watched a bunch if auctions until one was in my price range for what I wanted to spend.

The hopper/hornets are cheap, parts are cheap, just be smart and you'll have a great little runner for your son, and keeping it running wont cost much.

PS. Also seen a couple of 'Super Hornets' which I know are pretty rare and they've not been re-released, so I'm considering bidding for one of them also.

The main reason why the Super Hornet has not been re-released (yet?) is the fact that it was in production for sooooooooooooooo long. There's nothing rare about them, despite what eBay sellers will try to tell you. You can't walk down the road over here without tripping over at least two or three.... well, maybe not that bad, but they're certainly everywhere.

Best way to go with Hornets and Hoppers (Super or not-so) is to watch lots of auctions, as mentioned above, and pick off the cheap ones. Probably the only relative rarity amongst them would be the Super G version of the Grasshopper 2, and even then, they don't add very much of a premium over the standard GH2 (in my opinion).

Good luck with your search, and remember to try to not buy the first one you see!

Agree with Alex.

New in box Super Hornets actually aren't common (surprisingly), and I've seen their prices creeping up a little. But runners certainly are common.

OP, nice to hear you're looking to run an old model, rather than just buying a re-release. I am always amazed at how cheap many vintage models are, and I always "vote 1" for running old school cars. :).

In terms of whether old plastics are "brittle" or not, well that's got to be assessed on a case by case basis. I mean, my old basher Hornet from 1984 seems just as nimble and flexible as the day it was born. Tamiya plastic is good stuff.
