Halfords plastic primer works well but it goes on quite thick and you need to leave it ideally a couple of days before the top coat goes on, especially if you intend to sand it beforehand.

For a one coat solution you could use Humbrol spray enamel, but you do get a lot of paint for your money in Halfords compared to model shops

If you wet and dry with 2200 it gets a good finish. I did a lunchbox shell pink for my daughter that had been painted before. 2200'd it smooth after removing most of paint with t cut (took ages but didn't fancy the brake cleaner route!) and sanded off the roof guttering as it was all bashed and scraped....

Tamiya or other hobby paint are more expensive than car paints, but its horses for courses. :-)

I went shopping with the family earlier and the store in question (Halfords) was nearby, so I purchased the 3 items in my original post.

I may do a bit of sanding tonight and use the primer/filler tomorrow. Do I need to sand it down again AFTER applying the primer?

I tend to use a scotchbrite abrasive pad (te green abrasive bit of the foam pad scourers are ideal) after the primer stage, its not too rough and does enough to smooth off any dusty appearance in the primer. But as i said earlier, wait at least 48hours after priming before sanding lightly

I swear by the Halfords brand car paint for use on hard bodys . With a little care you can get a really good finish even with a minimum amount of skill . The big advantage as far as i'am concerned is the choice of colours and being able to match a 1.1 paint exactly . Great value too
