Hi all, just joined the forum having purchased my very first Tamiya RC build (Lunch Box)

I've already started the build and have the following upgrades:

Aluminium body mounts

Ansmann 85mm shocks

Tamiya Ballrace Set

Now at the stage where I've to fit the rear shocks. Not sure if I require any other non standard parts to be able to fit the Ansmann shocks to the rear and front ? Had a quick look on here but can't find much info. Any help appreciated.

Not even finished this build yet and I'm contemplating what Tamiya build to do next !! Maybe the Wild One or Sand Scorcher.

Cheers guys :)

if you go to the end of the lunchbox manual there's a section for 'optional parts' and it shows how to fit the real shocks. you probably already have everything you need in the kit.

If its a new build then the Lunchbox instructions show you how to fit the shocks using the "U" shaped brackets included in the kit. Sound like you've got most of what you need, maybe a 5th shock may help at the back end.

Thanks for all the replies, much appreciated !

Been a complete newbie to these builds, I'm sure I'll be back asking for more advice.

Any idea where I can buy those foam inserts for the tyres ? Cheers

just about any decent rc store should have the foams mate - give Modelsport or Fusion a look :D - if you need help just ask for Joanne

Any idea if these are suitable ? All I can find online. Cheers

The lunch box uses a odd 2.1 wheel and i dont know of a insert that is actually made to fit that size rim . i would think that 2.2 size is ' near enough' to make no differance . Either of those should be fine. All your aiming for is that the tire is less spongy so the suspension can actually work instead of most of the 'bounce' being taken by the tire leading to eventually the tire either coming off the rim or spliting its side wall . As said your run times will improve too as the tire will not be ' dragging' and stay far more round .

Thanks for the info on the foam inserts. Placed an order with Modelsport for them this morning.

Popped into my local B&Q after work for some M3 bolts to do the Ansmann shocks. Not a single M3 bolt instore :( so the build is on hold until later in the week.

ya most LHS's don't stock bulk hardware like a home improvement hardware store.. you usually gotta buy a couple extra kit bags on eBay to have spares.. trust me if this is only your first RC you'll have tons of spares before you know it..

make sure to post pics!

Ahhhh Maplin, why didn't I think of there ! Even pass our one on the way home from work. Will pop in tomorrow night. Was just about to hit the buy button on ebay !!

I'll certainly get some pics posted up ASAP.

Cheers

If you've got a Maplins store nearby its worth a visit. The screws set come in to lengths. Great store for tools, project boxes and lecky bits.

I've had great service form www.westfield-fasteners.co.uk for machine threaded screws - good prices for stainles hex cap head bolts, nuts and washers (although the M3 washers are bigger diameter than the Tamiya ones)

Pity they don't really do the self tapping screws

RPC Racing do screw sets - i've ordered one for my Optima Mid rebuild - not arrived as yet so a bit uncertain as to how well their set will match the original mix of screw types and sizes

I bought the RPC stainless set for TL01 to check them out. They're all 3M machine screws which should hold into plastic better than the standard Tamiya screws but they don't include any step screws or suspension pins. I've not actually tried them out in a chassis yet but I hope they will hold into stripped thread holes.

yes, this is my fear, not many fastener places sell self tappers that are suitable for RC :(

Here's a pic of my almost finished Lunch Box. Just need to attach the wheels and spray the body.

Very enjoyable for my first Tamiya build. I've noticed that the motor cables are maybe a tad close to the rear tyre. Should there be a decent gap there ?

Now debating what to build next. Think it's between the Wild One, Sand Scorcher or maybe the rock crawler Unimog. Any suggestions for a 2nd build ?

Cheers

the tire will clear if out flatten the leads off the motor (that's why in the directions they use a zip tie to secure them out of the way- of the tire)

I suggest your next build be the Wild One buggy or a Clod Buster is a ton of fun to build as well (if you have the space haha)

here is mine I just got running w/ a vintage Futaba radio - this thing is so fun haha - I plan to do the 5th shock for sure as well as the tire foams

Got the wheels on earlier, tyres with foam inserts.

Think it looks good with a blinged heatsink, 85mm ansmann shocks and the aluminium post mounts :)

Might even get round to the 5th shock mod at some point.

I like the look of those heat sinks although I've never noticed my motor getting hot. If you're worried about the motor wires rubbing the tyres even after you bend the contacts you can always de-solder them and reattach at 90 degrees so they don't stick out straight from the end of the motor.

Looking good . Just keep a eye on the bottom seals on the Ansmann shocks as they have a habit of blowing .
