OK so I recently bought a Twin Detonator off percymon and I absolutely love it except for the fact it's too slow. I considered throwing in an ESC and a pair of Sport Tuned motors but I felt that this wasn't going to be enough power, plus I've read in several places that the Sport Tuned motors run with advanced timing which would mean that the motor running backwards would be dragging.

I then considered going the brushless route but this would mean running 2 motors, 2 ESCs and 2 battery packs which is both heavy and costly so I've ruled this out (for now).

Where I'm at now is I have bought 2 Super Stock RZ motors, an 11 turn ESC and some 12AWG wire so that I can replicate this: http://craftlab.net/epage/etechmotor.htm

Now after reading this thread here: http://www.tamiyaclub.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=61608 I've decided to reset the timing of the two RZs to 0 so that neither are advanced and both should run with equal power in opposite directions. I know I could alter just one to run with reverse advanced timing but I feel setting them both to 0 will give me better run time (am using only 1 4700 NiMh battery) and also more torque.

The only other thing I have planned is to fit a heat sink and fan combo to the ESC in order to keep it cool as I suspect the current drain of 2 RZs will cause it to get a tad warm.

I've just received 2x 20T steel pinions for it today but I may hold off fitting them for now and just try the stock 18T pinions on it initially as I have a feeling the 20Ts may be a bit much for the ESC to handle. Like I said though, it's all a bit of an experiment.

Anyway, I'll post pics and update as I go. All thoughts are welcome and I hope you enjoy the journey of me trying to create a quick brushed Twin Detonator!

The esc modification is nice and easy and works well I did this to mine. Should be plenty fast I run mine on silver cans 20t pinions and 8.4v and its pretty fast so with rzs will go very well indeed plus they can be rebuilt.

Hi Steve

Nice truck, Saw it on ebay and it looked mint.

I also have a TT, and have started to mod - Mtroniks Tio Storm X ESC, next a couple of fireball 15T.

do you have a link for the steel 20t pinons as I'll need to do that in the future

Certainly, here you go: http://www.fusionhobbies.com/product/0600-rw-racing-0-6-pinion-gear

Make sure you select the right No. of teeth before you order though!

I would try the 18s with firebolts before jumping to 20t pinions see how the temps are.

I agree, I'm thinking of sending my 20T pinions back and exchanging them for 18T instead.

OK so I caved and ordered a pair of 18T steel pinions as I think if this is worth doing, it's worth doing properly.

I also received the first of the two RZ motors today and I've already retimed it to 0 degrees forward rotation, which was surprisingly easy to do. The other one will be retimed to 0 degrees reverse rotation (by rotating the endbell 180 degrees) to keep the wiring polarity the same on both motors, if only for neatness.

Got the other motor, ESC, wiring adapters and bullet connectors today so have managed to sort out 90% of the upgrade, both motors have now been retimed to 0 and the endbell spun 180 on one to reverse the rotation. Just need to wire in an on/off switch and mount the ESC fan when it arrives, oh and wait for the steel 18T pinions to come also. Then it'll be show time!

Nice work Steve - can't wait to hear how this set-up performs. You might want to start thinking about alloy shock towers and 100mm oil shocks though.

If you ever sell this one, the next owner will have to add wings to continue the developments !

The traxxas motors run on 14.4 or 16.8 volts though. I think current system looks the mutts.

it does... 2 batteries in series and 2 motors in series... if you want HP the stock Emaxx setup can't be beat.. plus the newer 16.8v is Lipo ready and waterproof

My stock 3903 Emaxx can't be beat in the HP area.. pulls wheelies in stock form does standing back flips with 2 lipo's

Thanks chaps, I specifically went this route as I wanted to keep it nice and light and avoid having an extra ESC and battery if at all poss. I'm more likely to go LiPo with it if this works to save even more weight and improve it even further.

David, I'm deffo going 100mm shocks on this too, don't you worry! ;)

Yeah it's not lipo ready though mate be careful you need low voltage alarms I have the evx 2 16.8 in mine.

Ordered the 100mm shocks and alloys towers last night, can't wait for them to arrive!

In the mean time the ESC fan arrived today so I've just mounted it to the back of the ESC which luckily already has cooling fins built in so that was one less thing to have to sort out. Pics:

I ordered the front & rear GPM kit that comes with the full screw set off eBay, came to £20 delivered.

well wroth the £20 . High quality items that make a heck of a improvement with 100mm dampers mate
