Right, few weeks ago started stripping an SRB chassis, for playing around with.

Took out the old motor, tossed it away, cos got a load of 540's with all my TB01's that were replaced with better motors.

Trouble is, these newer 540's seem about 3mm longer than the old ones, as the motor cover no longer fits.

So, does anyone make a 'short can' 540?

I tried a Reedy stock motor today, with a short can, but all the purple anodized rubbish on the back actually makes it longer than a TB01 540.

Now, I got a SRB chassis, and no means of propelling it forwards[:(]

If this is going to be for a runner why not drill a hole in the case to thread a screw to hold a modern motor in. You might have to enlarge the motor hole a bit also. On my runner rough rider, it appears there is a hole drilled in the case from the factory there

Hey Jim

That was the original plan - been dremelling all afternoon, reshaping the pinion side of the gearcase.

I wanted to re-fit the original covers (or one of the shiny ones) back on though, so this 'extra length' is a minor inconvenience.

If the 'old' motors no longer exist in any form, I may make a spacer for those 'reject' shinies and fit one of them on.

The gearcase has had motor mount holes in it for a couple of weeks now, but between bead blasting and aluchroming, this is the first chance I've had to play

Don't the new 540s have 4 slots in the gearbox end of the can, while older ones only had 2 large slots? I think the SRBs have a mounting lug in the gearbox case about 3mm tall that the motor locates on that prevents the newer 4 slot 540s from fitting all the way into the gearbox.

Just making sure that you've checked it.

As the 540 is the motor length (54mm)f does this mean your new 540s are really 543s?[;)]

hey terry,

yeh, i know the "lug" you mean. on my rough rider runner i ground that off so i could fit a modern sport tuned 540 motor. and just like andy, i found i could no longer fit the plastic end cover. so all i did was drill another hole in the gear case at the front, so i could hold the motor in place with a screw. at the back of the motor, because i could no longer fit the cover, i sealed the motor in (around the joint) with clear silicone sealant. it sounds a bit of a bodge, but it looks ok and has worked ok so far........

it all depends on how much of a perfectionist you are andy...[:D].

true, some metal endbell motors had cans with 4 smaller holes

(usually all Johnsons).

But of late they've gone back to 2 large holes again.

Cheers Balmy

Got a possible solution lined up, will let you know in due course.

But just in case, have it bagged and ready to go at a moments notice[;)]
