Hi all I just finished refurbing a Fox. I decided ro install a tamiya sports tuned motor to give the old girl a bit of speed. I took it out today for a test run with a 3700 nimh battery. I got great speed going forward but reverse speed was poor. Is this common with the sports tuned motor.

Sport Tuned motor does have a little more advance in the timing over a regular RS540-SH Mabuchi. Advance when the motor is turning forward is good, but when the motor runs in reverse rotation it becomes more retarded.

If you combine that with 50% reverse/brakes of a TEU104/105, then it makes for really weak reverse and brakes. Get a TEU101-BK or a better ESC from another brand.

I have a sports tuned in a TA03 coupled with a TEU101 and reverse is fine

And so it should be.

The TEU101 is 100% power forward and 100% power reverse/brakes. The TEU101-BK is now discontinued and has been replaced with the TEU104-BK and TEU105-BK which is 100% power forward and only 50% power for reverse/brakes.

The TEU104 update is a low voltage cutoff for Li-FE packs (5.0v cutoff).

The TEU105 update adds to the TEU104 a BEC so it can be used with modern receivers.

Hi I forgot to mention the esc I'm using us a etronics probe plus. I've git one fitted in my re re wild one which is fitted with a tamiya super stick rz motor and that is stupidly fast going forward with a slight reduction in speed in reverse.

Have you tried it with another motor to compare reverse performance?

(Etronics Probe Plus is auto calibrate/setup if anyone is wondering.)

Hi I haven't tried another motor yet that was going to be my next more of call. I've found that the etronics probe plus is very good value for money esc £19.99. I've got them fitted in my re re frog and my re re boomerang and I've never had a problem just plug in and away you go. I'm not a fan of the tamiya 101 or 104.

i've been a bit blind to the difference with these - this is a great concise summary of the differences... thanks!

Hi I swapped the tamiya sports tuned motor for an ansmann clash 22 turn motor. The fox has now got good top end speed and far better reverse speed. I was shocked at the difference, I wonder if other people have had the same experience with the tamiya sports tuned.

Now you've got me curious. I've got a sports tuned in my Bruiser re-re and while it does seem a little slower in reverse it wasn't THAT bad. I'm gonna have to take it for a spin when it dries out here and make sure I'm remembering correctly.
