Hi all,

Since changing the engine in my Terra Crusher I'm going through TNX spur gears by the bucket load. I am wondering if anyone has upgraded the gear box and spur from a more recent vehicle? The truck is awesome but spares are becoming more of a nightmare!

Cheers

I'll suggest to convert it in a Brushless electric monster truck, with lipo batteries and modern brushless motors you will not regret the nitro motor and you can use all electric monster truck gearcases.

The original spares are really rare and anyway I think you must choose for a different brand gearbox in any case.

My two cents.

How hot is your clutchbell getting?

I've seen a miss-tuned clutch which slipped excessively causing the clutchbell to become extremely hot and it would melt the teeth off the spur gear in under a tank of fuel. Once the clutch was sorted, it never ate another spur gear.

Miss-tuned clutch could be the inside surface of the clutchbell is too smooth, rough it up a little with some coarse sandpaper.

Or the springs could be too strong, or too weak. Too strong and the clutch is only fully engaged when the engine is peak revving, and slipping the rest of the time. Too weak and the clutch shoes are dragging on the clutchbell even at idle.

Worn clutch shoes do a similar thing to the springs being too strong. The wide clutch gap takes a lot of revs before the clutch is fully engaged.

Contaminated clutch shoes (if they are a composite type material) can also cause the shoes to slip. Oil or similar spilt through the clutch is not good.

Another cause of slipping clutch is too high gearing. A change to larger wheels is a change in gearing, or just the wrong ratio clutchbell/spur. Running on high drag terrain can also cause the clutch to slip, like long grass or very soft sand.

Engine idle set too high will also cause the clutch shoes to drag on the clutchbell when idling.

Thanks for the replies. The clutch bell is look a little tired to be honest. I haven't checked the shoes since I bought the new O.S. engine. I am finding when fitting a TNX spur gear on I have to open the gearbox up as I can't get it tight enough. Something isn't quite right there thinking about it as I type this!

I did read somewhere that someone has successfully run a Traxxas Revo spur gear and a different clutch bell. Has anyone heard of that or similar?

I was thinking of a different brand gearbox but where to start and what brand/model to take the gearbox from is the question! If possible I would like to keep it nitro as I have another brushless truck already.

Cheers
