I have a TL-01 Chassis and I am struggling with what do do with it.

I have seen "neverfollows" project audi quattro tl-01 which looks fantastic.

Can anyone inspire me for what I can do with this chassis?

How about fitting long arms, big wheels/tyres, a GRU and a truck shell, and turning it into a monster truck?

The TL-01 gearing isn't up to big wheels, which will cause poor acceleration and motor overheating.

Indeed, which is why I said that a GRU should be used if going the monster truck route.

RC4WD make nice compact ones that do the job nicely.

The Charger from the film Death Proof is a great alternative (looks awesome in matte black):

I am finishing up a Death Proof Nova as we speak...

LOVE this! How does it run as a rally car?

Steve

No idea actually. I still have to trim the front arches a bit more so I can steer without rubbing the body and pilfer the electronics from one of my other cars, but I've been dragging my feet and getting sidetracked with other projects.

It's based partially on this with a mix of this and this

Edit- The shortened chassis halves and prop shaft are courtesy of MrCrispy btw.

Thanks. :) I didn't know that GRU means gear reduction unit. I wasn't aware of such units.

Those knock-off TL01B models from China used the Blackfoot monster truck wheels/tyres and had no issues with overheating? They did come with a motor heat sink but despite this I don't think they get overloaded too much. Remember that the Baja King and Baja Champ had no drivetrain alterations from a TL01 and these ran bigger wheels designed for off-road use.

Nevertheless, I used my TL01 to build a rally car and it was great. Lock the rear diff for better drifts in sand/dry dirt. I even ran a 23T motor with no overheating issues. I'm on the hunt for a Baja Champ body as I'm going to rebuild it and give it to my nephews for Christmas :)

The TL-01 gear ratio using the regular spur & counter gear and the 19T pinion is 7.96 : 1. This is yet OK for buggy sized wheels and using a regular 540 sized brushed silvercan, and brushless motors up to 3000 kV (maybe more, depending on motor specifications, but please don't nail me down for that assumption). 540 sized brushed motors with more RPM/less torque would get a hard time on buggy wheels and larger, thus the need for a GRU (as per XV pilot) or a 550 sized motor (as per dyahipfakta).

TL-01 & TL-01B gear ratios:

Regular gears

19T = 7.96

21T = 7.20

23T = 6.57

"Speed tuned" gears:

19T = 5.95

21T = 5.39

23T = 4.92

For a comparison

DT-02 gear ratios:

17T = 9.82

19T = 8.31

I found a Silvercan in my Tamiya TL01B Baja King would over heat quickly even with the smallest 19T pinion, the standard super grippers tyres don't allow any spin up. Since I fitted an HPI 35T motor it's been much better thanks in part to the integral fan. It also hasn't lost much top end power.
