I have one of these fitted to my early Hilux.

I haven't seen one before, there are no stickers on it.

Is it any special or rare, or is it just a standard issue motor I haven't had before now?

I do know it isn't a Conrad Special!

Thank you!

If I remember correctly, the black sport tuned motors came in an endurance and a sprint version, and the colour of the endbell decides teh version. :)

Sounds like a "Black Motor Sprint" as gozone says.

They're interesting because they were among the first tuned motors.

Does it look like this?

If so, then a very interesting choice for a Hilux - though I suppose that the statistics state it has marginally more torque than the stock Mabuchi of that period in other Tamiya kits.

A case of "you use what you have" perhaps?

I think you are probably right on this, but I'm sure the extra tourqe is useful on this heavy old bus!

Over night I've decided to keep this motor in my spares box as it seems to be a bit more interesting than the standard silver can.

Sounds about right. While I would have thought that anybody who could afford a Hilux could also afford a suitable motor to go with it, we do not know why the black can was put there. Whatever the case, an interesting find in a 3-speed.

The pinion on the Hilux is a press fit so it wasn't so easy to change out the motor. That's cools your's was

I read somewhere it was 'sweated on'.

I might warm the pinion up and see if that releases it or just swap it for a standard motor and pinion from another Hilux, I have a few to choose from at the mo!
