hey up guys as winters on its way and a lack of places to use the few rc vehicles ive got im looking at doing a project, I was thinking of doing a star trek enterprise with full lights etc ive seen the 1/350 polar lights enterprises and this is the one I want to attempt but I have never built a treky ship let alone drill all the holes and put lighting in to a model :( so have any of you guys built one or got experience with how to light it or which hole to drill etc.

I was looking at the revell 1/500 in to darkness enterprise but there seem to be a lot of inaccuracies on the kit and I wouldn't know what was right and wrong either from what ive been reading.

so if anybody has built one or know how to light it can ya giz a helping hand :) pretty please.

this is what Im hoping to achieve maybe fingers crossed :)

I'm more of a Millenium Falcon kind of bloke, but that Enterprise looks fantastic!

Sorry can't be of any help, but please post a build thread here if you decide to go ahead with it mate!

Hey bud im gona defo build it just looking for help and advice if i get stuck or totaly lost. Whilst making it accurate lol.

Id love to have a go at a falcon aswell think that would look awewome to lit up. If this project goes well im gona attempt doing a uss sulaco from aliens with all the lights etc to go with the enterprise.

I think for a lot of the smaller lights, fiber optic would be the way to go. It's quite a bit smaller and easier to get into tight spots and then you only need one light source in a more convenient place. Then if a bulb goes bad it's not such a big deal. Just an idea

ill pick your brain about it when the kit turns up, im gona order the polar lights 1/350 enterprise 1701a as the main project but to start im going to have a crack at the revell voyager see if I can handle the bigger project. id rather waste £30 quid on voyager than £160 on the enterprise kit. so ive just ordered voyager off ebay ill keep ya updated on how im doing, if it goes pete tong I might have to get someone to build it for me :-/ so heres the voyager kit:

well my voyager has just turned up today :) cant wait to get dug in to this build its been a while so hopefully I don't balls it completely up lol. just waiting for the photo etched parts to turn up and the lighting kit from trekmodler from the states and its game on ill post the pics etc if you guys are interested if not then let me know and ill close this thread.

@bangkokbulldog if no one is keen on this build as its not rc then if you want updates on it pm me your email and ill send ya the progress reports as I do things on it. ive got at least a 2 week wait for the photo etched parts to turn up apparently so I got a bit of time to get the rest of the stuff like paints etc sorted :)

You can post what you like in this part of the forum and I, for one, haven't seen anything like this built before so there's interest here.

A lot of interest from me, too, as I was a retroactive fan of the Star Trek series and a fan of plastic model building. While I mostly appreciated the original series, any model of any Enterprise is still very intriguing!

Posted

Ok cool guys i wasnt sure if there is interest being as its revell and a static model and being a star ship lol ill continue posting up the build then :) cheers guys

And me. Great builds there guys.

Back in my art college days I had some crazy idea to make a Borg cube out of leftover bits of sprue and stuff in my bits box. Hadn't quite got around to lighting it when someone nicked it from the studio!

I got one of those quick build Millennium Falcons for a birthday some years ago. One day I'll detail it and light it up to make a larger version of this

Thats pretty awesome mr crispy there are a few large scale falcons on youtube all lit up looks well nice. Like i said 1/677 voyager first its actualy massive considering the scale you dontget how big it is from you tube vids then on to the 1/350 enterprise, ive looked at the sulaco again and its not very interesting with the wow factor like the other 2 a bit bland so may do a star wars thing.

Id of liked to have seen the borg cube think that would be cool. Infact anything sci fi related.

well a little progress on voyager my postie loves me bless him he has been every day for the past couple of weeks. any way all the paints turned the tiny drill bits which are 0.3mm for drilling the windows out the milliput putty and the dremmel hand tool :) oh by the way if any body is going to buy one and DO NOT get the am tek £12.99 thing its crap big time :-/

I would buy a cheap fibre optic xmas tree, strip some fibres and use them in bundles . Make up a bundle lit by a led and use the individual fibres to light the windows .

+1 to that. My brother picked up an old fibre optic lamp and stripped it for cables on a project. Or if you only need a couple you can heat and stretch a bit of clear plastic sprue over a candle. Works just as well but maybe a little less flexible.

Thanks Sabreuk1. That Falcon and X Wing model was from the Hoth Rebel base set. I was pleased with the "asteroid" as it was just a bit of polystyrene I shaped and melted with liquid poly glue.

Ive ordered the light kit from trek modeler just gota wait for it and the photo etched parts to turn up from the states. Once ive got the kit though and know how it all works i reackon i could experiment and make my own light kit up for the big enterprise.

I do like the lil star wars diorama looks awesome i was looking at a big falcon today in my nearest hobby store maybe ill give it a bash in the future.

I like the idea with the xmas tree i never thought of that migyt be worth a tinkering with defo a +1 for that idea :)

UPDATE:

well started on the drilling tonight and wow there is a defo knack to drilling the windows out, ranging from 0.6 to 0.3mm :-/ yes that is 0.3 the worlds smallest drill bits. I did balls up a little to start so there is a couple of windows that I needed to fill with putty and going to redrill them once its dried but im going for a fully lit voyager it took a good couple of hours so far just on drilling but I have thouroughly enjoyed getting my hands back on :) well heres the pics so far if anybody is going to try a project like this and hasn't got the patience to drill tiny holes giz a shout ) ive also tidied the windows up since the pics so there nice and smooth and correct dimensions rather than rough looking in the pics ;)

Looking good sabreuk1. Are you going to fibre optic every window? I think in the Star Wars films they just had a couple of lights inside the model and painted the inner surface white to help diffuse and reflect the light. That would mean you need access to replace the bulbs though and you need to consider the heat produced.

I was lucky enough to go to a Star Wars exhibition held in The Barbican Centre back in 2000. It was like walking around a sci-fi museum with all the props and costumes from the films. The Executor, the super star destroyer was amazing. Must've been over 5ft long, really fine detail even close up, think at the time it was the most expensive prop ever made for a film at $250k to make. It was sad to see it delaminating and coming apart in places, but it wasn't meant to last!

gutted about the star destroyer mr crispy bet that was an amazing site :) im sure they could repair it though but im not sure if it was mine I would want to.

on the lights though im using leds from trek modeller

the kit delivered was £94 from the states though so im hoping for good things when it turns up :)

For £94 I'd want a BJ thrown in lol

wooooa be very careful that its clearly marked customs duty paid or you might get hit twice over by HMRC once it arrives in the uk .
