Dyna_Storm_Build_01.jpg

In this thread I will be covering my Dyna Storm Rerelease build, including the kit standard build, then upgrading, with a weight comparison, and finally some track reports.

This is actually the third Dyna Storm that I have owned, the first was an original back in my college days, which I raced a few times. The second was a rerelease, and used only as a light basher/shelf queen. Both my previous Dyna's had weak points, which I'm sure any Dyna owner will agree with. I had a D2 failure on my first run with my original DS, and after going through 3 replacements, decided to risk getting the TR15-T sprue, which worked a treat. On my second DS, I replaced these parts during the build, but as TR15-T parts are now getting scarce, other options will have to be explored.

In all, I will be replacing the D1 and D2 parts, the front C-Hubs, all FRP chassis components and the turnbuckles.

I am also investigating the possibility that the rear uprights from a TRF201 may fit the DS, as well as looking into some TRF universal shafts.

Finally, I will be running the car with a medium spec brushless setup, high torque servo and 2s LiPo, as I figure that the clutch will be able to handle it.

Anyway, I'll update later when I manage to get the first pics taken.

Thanks for looking.

Raced a DS up to when the 201 was released and with the weak parts replaced as by your post it became a reliable racer even if it always suffer some understeer....

On the other side is very stable even on very battered tracks.

I had a novak 8.5 brushless system on it and a Savox 1251 steering servo.

Good memories....

Bye.

Maybe you should merge these two topics, anyway. I run mine with a 8.5 Novak as well. The diff looses nothing to new diff designs, the slipper is a little complicated but works well, The car really needs the aloy rear bulk heads, no real need for the graphite chassis. If you cant find Nimrod rear arms order some TR15 rears. The car handles realy well with the increase width of the rear track. The factory shock settings are too soft, go to less holes front and rear in the shock pistons with med shok weight up front and heavy in the rear. My car did well set up this way on a track built for 1/8 truggy and buggy.

Thanks guys.

Here are the shots of the first few build stages.

As you can see, I have already ditched the kit screws and switched for stainless steel hex-heads. As I plan on dismantling the car once the stock build is complete and weighed, I figured that these would work better than the Tamiya kit phillips head versions.

Next up - parts 4 and 5 (attaching the steering assembly).

It's funny that in the manual, the 'parts used' section has been updated to include the stainless steel ball bearings that were included in the rerelease to replace the original brass bushings, but in the actual build diagram, the manual still says to grease the steering posts and alloy spacers. I didn't do that! ;-)

Completely agree mate! When I got my original, I did 'comment' (that's me putting it politely) on how odd I thought it was to ball race virtually everything, then leave the steering with bushings. I seem to remember that the front wheels were bushed too - but I may be thinking of another kit...

Anyway, here's the next part

Completed the front wishbone assembly - next up, attaching the front and rear to the chassis.

I reckon, beautiful pics too btw!

I'll be having another attempt at my original ds soon too, I just scored a nib set of original sleeved dampers as my originals just won't stop leaking... The pargu alloy rear d blocks are the way to go for sure.

Thanks guys. :D

No, not a professional photographer, but a keen amateur, I guess. I'm a 3D artist by trade, and do design and illustration too (that explains the heading panels for each stage of the build - maybe a little ott, but if a job's worth doing...)

If you're interested, I'm using a Canon EOS 550D with f1.4 50mm prime lens, a £30 light tent and £200 continuous lighting set that I bought off eBay. The main thing that I find helps is to shoot remotely, with my camera tethered to my PC. If you do this, then you don't touch the camera, so there's no chance of camera shake.

Yeah, this part of the build is just to weigh the kit stock, so I can gauge how much of a saving I get from my planned upgrades. Don't worry - there's no way I will be running her with these parts! ;-)

Anyway, here's the gearbox assembly going together.

Excellent build thread and fantastic pictures. I will be starting the renovation of an original Dyna Storm over the weekend. Obviously it will never look as mint as your new kit but i am hoping i can get it into original shape.

Thanks mate.

I actually stopped adding to this thread as I assumed that nobody was that interested. I always have kind of a rule that if I make 4 consecutive posts with no replies, I call it a day.

My DS is looking pretty good currently - I have fitted Pargu rear mounts and front C-hubs, Nimrod front bumper, motor guard, under tray and spur cover, and a full Fibrelyte carbon chassis (narrow version).

I still have to source electrics (I am going for a Speed Passion 10.5 brushless setup, that I can switch between DS and Egress), and some titanium turnbuckles, but it's getting there.

Good luck with your restoration! :)

Thanks guys. :)

The shell is currently being painted - had a masking issue after the first coat, so had to remove and re-apply all the masks. I'm going with my race colours (black, pearl white and fluorescent pink), in a similar design to the box art. The white stripes will be wider though.

I am also having a set of custom decals printed in the same colours, so they don't clash. I'll be doing the same for my Egress.
