Mode 1 has throttle on the right stick (up-down), so the right stick will not self-center (up-down), and is usually ratcheted. The left stick will self-center in both axis.

Mode 2 has throttle on the left stick (up-down), so the left stick will not self-center (up-down), and is usually ratcheted. The right stick will self-center in both axis.

Depending on the controller (and warranty) it can be fairly easy to convert between the two. I opened a cheap chinese 6 channel 2.4 GHz radio (brand named "Eurgle" of all things) and moved the ratcheting mechanism from one side to the other and centering springs back. This gave me a Bruiser controller on the cheap. Sadly I've still not gotten around to restoring the Bruiser :-(
