Hello guys thought this might be a good question how many models do you have and how often do you buy them I bought my first kit in august and have just got a hotshot I think I have caught the bug :D

Posted

I only have 5 cars, an original Hornet, an original Top Force (with EVO carbon upper and lower and DS dampers), a TA04 TRF, an Avante 2001 and an original 1988 Avante since very recent. My first was a 2nd hand Sand Rover back in the 80's and restarted the hobby 2 years ago.

I believe I have anywhere between seven and ten:

1. Toyota GT-One 1999

2. Buggy Champ 2009

3. Avante Black Special

4. Astute

5. Striker

6. Lancia Rally

7. Audi Quattro

Rumours abound within my collection of the following:

8. F103 15th Anniversary Special (hidden away somewhere)

9. Lancia Rally (completely disassembled; used for spares)

10. F103 (enough spares exist to build another one, I believe)

A little too much, potentially, but I do run my cars and give them the sort of affection a smitten teenager would, which I was not too long ago (a teenager, that is)... These days, away from home, my fully-assembled Lancia Rally sees all of the driving, though my Striker could get running again with new radio gear, as could my Audi Quattro with some reassembly, repairs, and electronics.

3 at the moment, soon to be 4. Caught the Tamiya bug earlier this year.

1. Lunch Box

2. Wild One

3. CR-01 Unimog

4. XV-01 Pro Chassis (inbound from Hong Kong)

Don't even want to think about what I've spent so far (lots of hop ups and bling on those builds).

Loving it though !

Since I don't do shelf queens or NIBs, I have quite a small collection by Tamiyaclub standards.

It consists of:

Twin Detonator

Farm King

Pajero Metaltop Wide

Stadium Raider

Hornet

Jun Watanabe Hornet

Rising Fighter

Mad Bull

Hotshot

TT01R TVR Tuscan

TT01D Sylvia S15

TT01RA Evo VI (homebrew rally conversion)

Desert Gator

Sand Viper

Baja King

Thanks to having a good supply of receivers and a TX with a 20-model memory, all are in full running order. Pop in a battery, select the appropriate memory location on the TX, and off we go!

About 65 runners with full radio kit installed (and yes, I do actually run them all fairly regularly), 10 NIB that need to get built this winter, and maybe another 8-9 projects or wounded ducks awaiting missing parts and/or repairs.

About a year ago (give or take?) there was a boring week where I just decided to finish up all my project cars, wounded ducks and basket cases that needed parts replaced. I ended up with 8 complete runners. Then I started looking at what it would take to make a few of the more ambitious / partial projects actually run, with the understanding that it would require a fair bit of parts to be sourced and ordered (and paid for, ouch). Did that, and got 3 more complete runners (and a few more got closer to being finished but just not quite RTR yet - but close!!!).

Then, just to be stupid, I got into the barely used and NIP parts that were stashed around the hobby room and in various boxes, etc., and actually put together a complete DF-02 buggy with only having to buy one NIP parts tree to get the front knuckles! I built it with some plastic fantastic pogo sticks from a different buggy kit, but once it was complete I just couldn't stand the sight of this lovely new built buggy with Tamiya's craptastic pogo sticks and broke down and ordered a new set of aluminum oil shocks. The total cost for the "NIP spares" buggy (without the 'gotta have em' new shocks) was about $8.43 or something stupid like that, LOL. I figured I could afford the $35 or so for a nice set of oil shocks, but it was just a lark to see this buggy evolve from new and lightly used parts and spares just laying about.

At the end of the week it looked like I had just acquired a whole Tamiya collection at a boot sale or something, and all of a sudden I had a serious storage issue, LOL. I resolved to stop buying anymore NIB kits or projects from Ebay. Yeaaah, that didn't work so hot.

Moral of this story: If you have bought your first Tamiya kit, and found your way to this forum, well ... you're doomed. Abandon all hope, ye who enter. Pretty much, just get zen with the fact your wallet is going to be empty, your credit card maxed out, and your spouse/significant other is going to be upset with you. If you find yourself using the shower to "rinse" your models after a hard day of use, and the kitchen table has soldering burns, or if you have ever considered selling the bed in the spare bedroom to make more storage for your R/C's, you might keep an eye open for the process server with divorce papers in hand, but you will look back fondly at the memory of your first kit and the onset of Tamiya addiction.

Just sayin'. :P

I have about 20 RC's right now from Associated, HPI, Losi, Tacon, Tamiya, and Traxxas in scales ranging from 1/36 to 1/5. Currently, I only have 4 Tamiyas - original Hornet, original Frog, CC-01 Jeep Wrangler, and a Super Clod Buster. Tamiya got me into hobby grade RC's in the 80's, then I got out of the hobby for years, Traxxas and Losi RTR's got me back into the hobby, and this year I just got back into Tamiya with the CC01 and the Clod Buster. I plan on getting more Tamiya kits because building is more fun these days than driving RCs.

I understand shelf queens that look amazing, but are still run. I do not understand how anybody could have a NIB collection. I'd have to open them.

For me..

1. DB-01

2. DT-02

3. TB-03

4. Mad Bull

5. Frog

6. Hotshot

For me, I don't buy a car, and store it or build it and store it. I buy a car and drive it, upgrade it, tinker with it, break it, research it (a lot), upgrades and tinker some more, buy lots of tires, motors, etc. I like to build up and tweak until the car is as fast as my abilities. I spend way more on parts than I would on new kits. I wish I had more kits, I just can't justify it considering how much I spend maintaining my current collection. I do try to buy ONE car a year to add to the stable so I have to put a lot of thought into what I get knowing the expenses aren't going to be just the price of the initial kit, I have to add a few hundred dollars worth of parts and upgrades into it too.

Fun in RC can be a lot of things.. Racing, collecting, building. Great hobby we have here!
