Are pulse jets illegal in the uk?

I was emailed this from HobbyKing today saying pulse jet now available in the UK but I thought they were illegal in the UK?

I would love to see one of these attached to a RC car! You would need a massive runway a long way away from people!!

Don't think so ?

Plenty of examples of home made pulse jets on youtube.

They also made them on the 'Scrapheap Challenge' TV show a few years ago and raced the completed contraptions - I think it was at Santa Pod ?

Be aware that they do get VERY HOT and can be a bit dangerous...

That takes dumb and dangerous to a whole new level... lol. That would be one of those things where good frosty pints are required when using.

AFAIK, pulse jets are not illegal to own. However you run the risk of legal issues if you use them in places with bylaws controlling noise pollution. With compensatuon culture being what it is, you also run the risk of being sued for damages by Joe Public who wanders too close without appropriate ear protection and suffers hearing loss as a result of the racket.

However if you have a large deserted area of private land on which to play, you shouldn't have any trouble from the law.

Many years back when I lived Up North ( Yorkshire ) a group of us used to run RC planes and cars at the old Elvington Airfield near York . Quite a few of the Guys were shall we say ' somewhat eccentric ' . They would turn up with all sorts of home brewed contraptions . How about a rocket boasted nitro go cart ? Not extreme enough ? Oh hang on the go cart just happened to have a 750 cc Suzuki engine .

A lot of Large Scale jets were flown too and i'am almost sure someone tried to run a pulse jet powered RC Dragster .

If you have the correct venue well away for the public and without noise prohibitions pulse jets are perfectly legal in the UK .

A guy used to run one at the woodvale airshow a while back.He must have had a special licence and been insured to the max,as if it went out of control and into the crowd,as a few planes did back then,i would just slice folk in half!!

Managed to find it! :-

That's a great airplane video! I can see why people would be tempted to use a pulse jet for a plane!

It was great to be a 'youngster' to see and hear the thing in action. Could be so so dangerous in the wrong hands though, as said 'rocket jet strapped to a flying blade' which just would not notice you as it chopped you in half.

Not been to woodvale rally since its not been held at the RAF air field so not sure if it does still fly?
