Found a cheap radio to work with the 3Racing winch
A lot of 3ch only have a 2 position 3rd, for changing gear on nitros or engaging reverse etc.

This one has a 3 position slide-switch in front of the steering wheel making it perfect for a winch

Branded as Carson, it's called a Reflex Wheel Pro 2 LCD (catchy eh?)
Not sure how you're supposed to realise it's a 3 channel set from that, but there ya go.

It's got end point adjustment on all three channels, so 3rd could also be used for a dig box on a crawler.
Also has;

  • Reverse on all 3 channels
  • ABS on Throttle*
  • Steering and Throttle expo*
  • Steering and Throttle dual-rate*
  • 15 model memory with 3 character model name
  • Stupid looking brake disc and caliper inside steering wheel
  • Charging socket - transmitter runs off 4 AA batteries (not included)
  • France switch - must be set to F if used in France*
  • Throttle rate adjuster switch for nitro (minimizes 'brake' travel on trigger)
  • Blue backlight on LCD screen

(* no idea what they do so don't ask)

As well as Carson's own, the transmitter's also compatible with the Maverick MRX - 242 2.4 GHz 3Ch Receiver

At 35 x 26x 14 the supplied receiver seemed pretty big, but I've mainly had Spektrum gear in the past and their receivers are tiny

First off though, here's the winch :)

And now the radio

The all-important 3rd channel switch

Other stuff it may or may not need

There are some more compatible LCD/3ch models:

- Carson Reflex Wheel Pro LCD #500033 (2011 model, included 4ch receiver #501512 lacks BEC, don't let you fool by the sticker on the RX case)

- Carson Reflex Wheel Pro2 LCD #500037 (2012 model, included 5ch receiver #501514 features BEC)

- Kyosho Synchro KT-201

There's also a waterproof Carson BEC-receiver #501522 sold seperately. All receivers are compatible with all transmitters.

The basic transmitters Carson Reflex Wheel Pro #500032, Pro 2 #500036 and Kyosho Synchro KT-200 all lack the LCD and 3rd channel switch. They are still compatible to the same receivers.

If you buy one of the BEC receivers, be sure to check them as soon as you can get your hands on them. Or ask your seller to check them in first place. Some production runs in 2012 were faulty and thus these BEC receivers will loose contact frequently even at short distance. Defective receivers can be replaced for functioning ones by Carson Modelsport or your retailer.

Be sure to check the France/Normal settings on transmitter and receiver are matching before filling any claims.

I have one of these 3ch Carson's, came with my Wraith and it's now is in my Twin Hammers. It's performed flawlessly for 1.5 years so far, I've not had any problems with mine and would recommend it.

The only minor niggle I can think of is the position of the wheel. It stands out further than my other pistol grip controllers so I can't control it one handed. Not that I do that much, it's just handy if I'm trying to video or have my kids with me and need to cuff em around the ear while driving :)

LOL you need practice - I took around 200 pics of the Sawback at the weekend driving one handed - the trick is sit down, rest TX on your knee or stand up and hold the transmitter against your thigh, but with the steering wheel pointing down

Steer with your fingers and throttle/brake with thumb

My old Spektrum was definitely easier to use one handed, but it is possible with this one.

Some kinda Wii controller-style wrist strap might not be a bad idea though...

Check out the last couple of seconds here, you can almost see it working (just behind Bigfoot throwing aliens at the Yeti)
