julastray 5 Posted December 7, 2013 Hello! I'm new in this forum, I just have written to ask something about a new motor for my vintage Sand Scorcher, but I think now it's time to show you the restoration work in the Scorcher. Now the work is "finished" (it's never finished because I allways want to get new things and spare parts) so I will post here the complete work. Hope you like it! And sorry if there are some mistakes in my English because I'm Spanish and it isn't my mother language. First of all, a little of history: my father bought this car app. 30 years ago, when he was more or less the same age as me right now (20). He used the SS a lot it that time, and then he lend it to my uncle and he used even more. After some years, since I was a child, I've always seen it in a closet and I remember that we ran it two or three times in 10 years, maybe the last one 7 years ago. I've allways been interested in cars, and I collect 1:18 model cars and wanted to buy a new RC car but then I thought "why not try to fix the old one?" I didn't know the real name of the model... I started investigating and asking in another forum, contact with a guy in my city and started with it... I wanted to make it able to play and I have installed some more modern parts. So it's all, now I leave you with all the photos. This was the initial state of the SS (there was a dust layer but I cleaned it before taking photos) After that, I started dissasembling and cleaning some parts Here you can see the amount of dirt there was -------------------------------------------------------------- Dissasembling half of the back axle, some pictures to compare before/after Before: After:
julastray 5 Posted December 7, 2013 Then I got the users guide and I started dissasembling every part and every screw: I cleaned all of the front axle and suspension, wheels and rims, chasis and some parts of the gear box. After that I assembled again the front part Before: After: Before: After:

Gruntfuggly 562 Posted December 7, 2013 That's a well used Scorcher - good to see it getting the resto treatment. You can get the metal parts nice and clean with some T-cut and a fine wire brush on a dremel. The transparent parts will improve with some polishing too. Have a look in this thread for some ideas for repairing the shell: http://www.tamiyaclub.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=69201

OldSchoolRunner 116 Posted December 7, 2013 Nice to see an original coming back to life! If you are going to run it may I suggest just getting a re-re body and repairing the original for the shelf! OSR

OldSchoolRunner 116 Posted December 7, 2013 Did really notice until now but this is a MK1 it is actually a first addition release Sand Scorcher chassis! Nice! It is actually worth some money my friend! I would suggest now that you restore this and maybe just use it for some very lite duty if you really are going to run it! Maybe try and pick up a re-release for running if you are going to seriously get back into it! There are several threads that will give you an idea of what you have and how to tell the difference between MK1 and 2s OSR

There are several threads that will give you an idea of what you have and how to tell the difference between MK1 and 2s OSR I know it is worth money but fortunately I don't need the money and I don't want this to be in a showcase, I want this to have fun with it as my father did. I will use it in the beach or in a field or something like that, not in circuits and not hard-use. I know this maybe souns like crazy to some people but it's what I think: if I don't need the money, this car is to be used.
