Hello guys,

Hopefully somebody can shed a little light or advise on what I should do about radio gear, Currently I have a vintage acoms techniplus on 27mhz which is only used for my MB and on re visiting the hobby two years ago I stuck with what I knew and bought a new acoms set but this time thinking I was being smart (more crystals) I went 40mhz which I use for my re re fire dragon and hornet.

The thing is I have just bought a stadium blitzer kit and on looking for a 40mhz acoms RX have found they only do the 27's now ...

So, what to do... I do not really want to use my old transmitter with my new cars and as I cannot get any more 40mhz RX's I am stuck with either getting a full acoms 27mhz system and starting again or making the jump to 2.4ghz.

The thing is I only really use my cars for bashing and chances are it will be mostly on my own, the acoms RX's and servo's are dirt cheap on the bay and I understand them, my worry is they stop making 27mhz and I have wasted yet more cash.

I have been looking at the 2.4 kit and it looks like a mine field... back in the day you got acoms or futaba if you were posh. Now there are all sorts of brands I have never heard of and the RX's are nearly as expensive as the full kit with transmitter

I have searched google but found very little to help, Spektrum seem to get a few mentions and I have seen a carson on modelsport that looks pretty good but again the RX is expensive.

Also why do they all seem to have more than 2 channels? Why do you need more than two? (can you tell I am clueless :D )

So do I stick with what I know or jump to 2.4? I really do not want or need anything expensive for my use so I do not know if I am just over complicating things.

One advantage I see of going to 2.4 is getting pistol grip, I have always liked stick trannys as its all I have known but one thing my reading had turned up is the advantages of pistol grip for steering feel.

Cheers

I made the (rather nervous!) jump to 2.4 GHz a couple of years ago. I've mainly gone with FlySky and Hobbyking, both have been cheap and reliable (Rx's £5-£10). If you're not in a hurry you can get FlySky kit cheaply from Hong Kong.

Just remember that with 27 and 40 MHz it doesn't usually matter if you're using a Futaba Tx and Acoms RX or whatever but generally 2.4 gear is not interchangeable.

Thanks for the reply, I have spotted the flysky gear which appears to be the same as the ansmann? I am not sure I understand the difference between the BEC RX's and those that do not have it? My understanding was BEC meant I did not need 4x AA's like in the good ol days. I assumed all RX's would have it now but the flysky stuff does not say it is so would I need the AA's with it?

2.4ghz is well worth the jump. Just add a bec in line for the sake of a few £ but make sure you do or you'll fry the rx and poss servos too. What speed controller are you using? It may have one built in already. The hobbyking 2.4ghz are only £15 or $ can't remember but pretty cheap grab one of them plus a ubec rated at 6volts. The third channel can be used for any number of things but for a car you will only need the two. In fact the hobbyking set comes with a 3 channel rx but only a 2 channel tx. If your stuck let me know and i'll find you a link. Where are you based? I also have a lot a 27mhz gear going cheap if you want to go that route assuming your in the uk

Most 2.4GHz receivers do not feature a BEC and are designed to operate at 4.8V to 6V. This needs either a BEC-equipped ESC (TEU-105BK, TEU-302BK) or the need for an external BEC (U-BEC) when being used with the TEU-101BK or TEU-104BK (as these don't feature a BEC and thus feed full 7.2V racing pack voltage).

Only a few 2.4GHz receivers have a BEC inbuilt and are able to operate under full racing pack voltage. If so, this feature is usually highlighted in the specs.

Thanks for the reply's guys, yes lentner I am in Bolton near Manchester, what gear are you selling?

I have been looking for in line bec's but am not having much luck? Currently I am just running tamiya 101's and my new blitzer has a 104 in the kit so no bec's. I also have an ez run brushless and I am not sure if that has bec in the esc?

Cheers greg was just going to find those threads.

I got a load of these becs and have checked them with my reliable multimeter and they are spot on.

I have several 27mhz stick transmitters modern and vintage but they are all much of a muchness. also a few new acoms 27mhz receivers. I have plenty of crystals too. Not looking for much as they are sitting in the cupboard. I have a few spare becs if your interested too. How about £25 plus shipping for a tx, rx set of crystals and a bec? However you wont need the bec if using 27mhz. By the way the ezrun has a bec built in as I have one also.

Thanks to everyone who replied, I spotted the offer time tunnel have on for TC members on acoms gear and ended up going that route as it was a bargain really. So sticking with 27mhz for now as it's probably fine for my needs.

Thanks as well to lentner for your kind offer, the time tunnel offer was just to cheap to miss and had already ordered when I checked back here :-(
