So when I got home today I had a fresh new package from the nice UPS man.

2 things I was keen to see are some updates to the VW style 5 lug steelies and a new scale driver.

First the new wheel covers. This time I created the entire wheel cover, not just an insert the fitted inside the Rough Rider stock wheel covers.

This allows for a slightly deeper depth in the front as well as allowing me to design the outer lip of the rim to be closer to the real wheel design. You also now only have to paint the cover 1 colour and do not need to black out the center

Original insert on the left, new wheel cover on the right.

Next is where I test printed one wheel cover in steel. This part is surprisingly heavy but I think looks great.

Now comes the new driver. Some things came out great, like all the detail and colours in his vans, the waffle sole looks awesome. Unfortunately the t-shirt design got smudged in the print process. I am going to talk to shapeways to see what can be done to rectify this, or I might just delete the design all together.

Now remember there is no hand painting in this process, this is exactly how he comes from the printers, it blows my mind that this is possible. Still lots of room for improvement but still way better than I could hand paint myself.

How they print in metal is just 'stupid amazing' :)

Wheels look great, they will suit many scale projects.

Because we're all used to seeing WW in the driving seat, this fella looks like he needs a few sessions down the gym.

You are right though, those Vans have come out really well, even the denim effect looks good. Shame about the logo, the idea i had for those jackets didn't work. Maybe some Kinght Customs decals are need ;)

Thanks Steve. I know what you mean about his physique. I have been wrestling with that and I am thinking if making some changes. Tamiya used a couple of different sizes if figures for their 1/10 models. The Wild One used the larger of the 2 sizes. This figure matches the smaller figures found in cars like the Rough Rider.

I think this just sold me !

I found an old pair of goggles from a McFarlane Akira action figure the fit my driver. I am also working with shapeways right now to figure out if the t-shirt logo can be printed without smudging.

Here is a shot of how much smoother the chassis is in the polished finish. Although it states polished in the description I wouldn't call it polished as you might get a metal part. It looks more bead blasted than polished in my opinion.

But the process considerable reduces the need for sanding.

Last night I found some time to start on the harnesses. These are from eBay and once you see them in person you'll never want anything else on your scale builds. I think I found them under seat belts for 1/8 or 1/12 Pocher kits. A big thanks to Kokuzu who originally put me onto these.

The parts are laser etched I believe and are ver fiddle to assemble.

After about an hours work :)

Grabbed some time this morning to fit the new shock towers. They look way more scale. These won't be as strong as the stock metal parts from the Wild One, but they look like they'll get the job done. Surprisingly stiff given the thin gauge of the tubing I used.

In the image below you can see the custom servo mount I created so that I can fit the slimline servo.

I like the 70's on here and the 60's on the desert patrol buggy.

Think I'm going to try my servo the other way up if it can sit lower.

Thanks for all the great comments so far guys,

So I am almost done with the Desert Patrol Vehicle and I'll be able to get back to updating this thread. Shapeways sent me a replacement driver due to the print issue with my logo on his t-shirt. Funny thing is that the t-shirt logo didn't get fixed, BUT the rest of the figure is in a much higher quality print. I'll post pics when I get a minute to show you what I mean.

Fantastic as always Toykid.

Hopefully not a repeat question; but which of these parts could I use to detail-up my FAV runner?

I love the look of the fuel tank/radio box lid, you say I'll need something shallow to fit but could you advise exactly how shallow that new box would be with your lid?

The scale engine; obviously. When are both items likely to become available on your shapeways store?

Ok, now I am back from my business trip, this is the last push to finish this build thread,

First I hand painted the engine with Tamiya grey. I find this is a good way to get a nice base and to smooth out any of the small steps that the polishing finish didn't get.

As I wanted this engine to be worthy of hanging with all the cool rails at Glamis, I spent more time than usual sanding all the small parts, as I want a lot of chrome on that engine.

It took me a while to figure out what to do with the rest of the gearbox. I settled on spraying the engine gearbox silver, the pinion cover will be chromed. Hopefully it'll come out like I hope.

A quick test fit to see if this is going to work.

Whilst the paint on the engine was drying I switched to finishing the front tires.

I have seen a few others do this and I wanted to give it a go too. Basically you cut out the Inners of the stock Tamiya smoothee's so you can fit them to the larger diameter Rough Rider wheels. This gives a slightly taller, slightly lower profile front tire.
