TA05 or TB03?

Recommended Posts

Most important is the build so which is harder/ more enjoyable and which is the best basher. Will be occasionally bashed. I have a TA05 ifs but got it second hand, never had a tb03 so don't know much about it. might do some drifting but not essential as I have other cars for that. leaning to the tb03 as it's a different addition to my collection

Thanks in advance.

I like the ta series and belt drive I find it a much more complex build I rebuilt a ta04 recently and really enjoyed that as its way different to the tt01 and tb01 can't comment on anything more modern though lol

I agree I also have a ta04 and enjoyed the build. Haven't run it yet. (only around the front room 😛)

If you plan to bash outside, the shaft driven may be a better choice

tb03 is not easy to build, noticeably more complex than tb02, requires attention to avoid mistakes. Looks boring once built.

ta05 looks better and is probably the better choice for indoor runs (clean environment)

The TB03 would probably be the better basher once built due to better dirt protection, but it is a pain to build properly, very prone to binding, and in need of careful shimming of the drivetrain to get it running right. This may be your idea of fun, but it isn't mine.

The TA05 isn't as dirt resistant due to its exposed belts, but it works great with minimal setup, and keeps working for ages with relatively little maintenance if used in cleanish environments. It is a smooth build, but not an excessively quick or easy one, interesting without being frustrating.

The TB03 is my idea of fun. :)

The biggest pain is shimming the diffs and pinions just right for the optimal gear mesh. The only other big complaint is steering slop, and that's easy to fix with a drill bit and some flanged bearings. Other than that, it shares in the ecosystem of TA05/IFS/V2, TB03/04, TRF416/417 parts and hopups like these other models. Bearings, oil dampers, turnbuckles, and ball diffs are standard, unlike the TT family of chassis. Use a 17.5T/2200kV or 13.5T/3300kV sensored motor with it, and it will reward you with predictable handling and respond well to setup changes.

Paul turned me on to the TB03 and it has been a pretty bulletproof car. The shaft drive feels every bit as smooth and finely engineered as a belt driven car (I was amazed). For a basher and drifter with a club race quality car, you can't go wrong with a TB03. Why not a TB04 though if you are thinking shaft driven club race car?

If you are looking for something more advanced and fun to build, why not a TA06? It is definitely more fun to look at naked and definitely a techical build.

For a fun basher, shaft drive is definitely the way to go. A part of me does still wish I had a TA06 purely for the mechanics of it and a fun build though. I would not want the exposed belt drivetrain on the tarmac I drive on though.

I already have a ta04 ta05 and a tt-01 so thought it would be nice to build something different. TA06 is quite a bit more money and is similar to the other ta cars I have. From a driving point of view the ta05 feels a lot better than the tt01 with a brushless installed so I do lome the feel of the belt driven stuff. How does the shaft driven tb03 compare to a fully hopped up tt-01? it will have the ally shaft etc.

Tbh i think only you can answer that question to what one you want, i.e. shaft or belt. I ran a TA05 at my local club on an outdoor track and it was great fun, also good fun to build. I then upgraded and purchased a TA05R kit and that was even better to build and more competitive to run. But i have to agree somewhat with others here that a sealed shaft drivetrain would be better.

Have you tried to look for a TB03R perhaps?

James

Why no TB04 pro? It sounds like that one would be a total win. It is like a TB03 with all of the parts you would already want in the kit.

Lazy me build my tb03d with shims as pictured in the instructions, didn't bother to check gear mesh, and the car was smoother that I expected. Used for parking lot drift during last summer with a 10.5t sensored combo, no failures. Sometime this winter will do the first maintenance disassembly. Yup steering sloppy, need to fix it.

In Europe the tb03 has a very nice price, only 20 euros more then the tt02 (at tamico), and you only need to fix the steering slop. Even has metal motor mount (at least the drift version). That would be a reason not to jump yet onto the tb04.

Personally love my TA05R and I want to build another with the IFS - horizontal front shocks and rocker arms, as to me this is an intriguing piece of design and looks pretty too!

There's no shortage of upgrades for a TA05 either, I'm not sure what the aftermarket is like for a TB03 but there's obviously the TB Evo models too.

What about the new TA06? It got released while I was 'out of the loop' so not sure how it differs from the 5, but might be worth consideration?

May I suggest an XV01... awesome quality build, designed to be good on and off road, best modern chassis IMHO.

I have actually a few kits in mind that I've wanted for ages and due to other commitments (namely three kids 1yo 2 yo and a 4yo) I haven't had a great deal of time do devote to my hobbies. looking forward To them getting older so they can enjoy them with me but they are a bit young atm. I currently have a grasshopper three hornets two lunchboxes a brat a dualhunter (14.4v) two fighter buggies an ff02 a ta04 and ta05 a heavily modded tt-01 and a kyosho ultima had two monster beetles but sadly I sold both and wish I hadn't. I have a budget from selling my roland drum kit due to a wrist injury so been putting an order together on Banzai. I love building and bashing, not in to racing as there is no where near me but I am interested in performance and tuning especially handling and would like to race one day. I currently have 7 kits in my shopping basket plus lots of hop ups and parts to finish other projects. A few of these kits i've wanted for years a few that Have been inspired by some recent build threads and a few that are just very good value so can't turn down. hence the question. I will be one very happy when the box of toys finally arrives but I wont be buying for a few weeks yet. I have been swapping various models around over the last few days with building anticipation 😊.

I also own a DT02 so might look at modern 4wd buggy too. I plan to drag the builds out over the year and savour them.

£710 inc shipping. plus customs which should be 20%. I will have to cut it back a little tho.

I wish I could talk you into a TB04 Pro vs. the TB03. I am a total sucker for buying a base model car and paying dearly for upgrade parts like I did with my TB03. From the list of stuff for your DT-02, it looks like you follow the same trend. The TB04 Pro will come with every upgrade part you will end up buying down the road (and paying twice as much), the chassis is LiPo friendly, the motor is mounted more efficiently, and it shares many parts with the TB03.

I do enjoy the upgrading but probably wont look to do too much with it in the near future. I will consider it though pending cost 😉(maybe i can get rid of something else?) one of the reasons of getting it was it was a new chassis for me to build and play with at a reasonable price and another one for my collection but the tb04 pro would also be new to me. I've not actually spent much on the dt-02 as it was the neo falcon and had bearings oil shocks etc already so was too big a deal. My tt-01 however is another story I posted a thread a few years ago with a list of upgrades and it was extensive to say the least but was a great learning curve to go through.

Yes, yes, I should build that TB04PRO... I was on travel for 3 weeks and then got excited about a cheap TRF801XT...

Tamiya released the short dampers separately now... It's entirely possible to put the TB04PRO carbon damper stays and short dampers on a TB03 now and get a little COG benefit...
